What would you do?
DH is overseas with MIL who has just chosen to go off dialysis. She has possibly 3-6 more days.
I just started a new job this year and have already taken a personal day to be with her. It is KILLING me that I am not there with DH.
I just sent my principal an email asking him to take 6 days unpaid. Am I crazy? He is very nice, but I don't want it to look like I take a lot of days.
what would you do?

i would ask. it is very understandable. if you have the days, why wouldn't you use them though?

bc I don't want to look like I am abusing sick days. I know it sounds crazy but I am coming from NYC BOE where I got docked 3 days for my wedding when I had 27 days in my bank.

I would def. take the days. Family is more important to me than anything else. Do you get bereavement days?

who cares whether you're abusing sick days or not. Dh's mother is dying and you need to do what's right for your family. don't worry at all what they think about it. that's not your concern. all you should be worried about it getting to her side ASAP.
i'm so sorry to hear her condition. you'll be in my thoughts.

Take them...a first year colleague has been out for a month because of a back injury....what are ya gonna do. Don't feel bad and be there with your family

I think you should go. I have been bad with that whenever I have had someone pass. I always take 1 day maybe 2 and I always feel like I don't want people to think I am abusing it- blah blah blah. (talking about my grandparents passing and such) and I look back on it now and you know what I regret not taking the time I need. It's about family and that is your main lifeline in life.

i took a week 2 paid and 3 unpaid to go to a wedding in Ireland in October. Its life.. Dont let that stop you.
