Health insurance question

Once you leave a job, how long does their health insurance is supposed to cover you? 3 months? is it possible that they refuse? my husband is leaving his job at the end of the week and I just want to be sure what to expect... the woman in his health insurance is "not sure" and has to "check" but she is saying that they probably just cancel insurance... I think she is full of bull! any info helps, thanks Chat Icon

Re: Health insurance question

It should cover you until the end of this month; meaning tomorrow is your last day. Unless he already paid for next month.

Re: Health insurance question

Yes, so being that his last day is Friday, Feb. 1, you will have coverage until February 29th.

At my compnay it's until midnight of your last day of active employment, unless you are out on leave.

Some companies will cover you untill end of the month.

You do have an option to purchase COBRA within 31 pf your last day of employment. This will retro back to your last date of coverage so there is no lapse in insurance.

yes...but please try not to go without health insurance if you do not need to. Cobra is available so ask your employer...even if its for a few months. Good luckChat Icon

This is how it is at my company. It's to the company's benefit to terminate coverage asap after the end of employment. It's a way to limit claims that could impact their ratings with the ins company.

Since it's unclear, tell your DH to get the last date of coverage in writing to protect himself.
