Did anyone have their DC toilet trained by 18 months?
Most people I know who have young kids right now waited until their child is 3 years old to toilet train them. But I keep hearing from the older generation (mom and grandma's age) that "back in the day," kids were trained by one and a half years old. Is this possible? My son is 14 months and can't even talk yet so I cannot imagine even trying at this point. Are their memories just faulty, or are we coddling our children?

My DD will be 18 months old tomorrow and we haven't started trying yet. We probably will start the training process in a month or 2.

Dd is 17 mths. I have introduced her to the potty. I put her on it before her bath. She watches me go. Has she gone yet? No, but its a start.

Re: Did anyone have their DC toilet trained by 18 months?
I was taught in nursing school that it's not physically possible to successfully potty train before 18mths old. They lack the muscle control to hold their bladders or something like that. Any parent that claims to have fully potty trained their children before 18mths means the parent is trained not the child.

Re: Did anyone have their DC toilet trained by 18 months?
I've been looking into this alot lately b/c I'm starting with DS (he's 15 months). It's true that children in previous generations and children in other countries are trained around this age. The current trend of waiting has alot to do with the convenience of disposable diapers and the idea of waiting for readiness signs. Personally, I know too many people who have battled their 3 year olds to get them to potty -- I'm not waiting.
I put DS on the potty every morning (he almost always pees) and when he wakes up from naps. I'm starting work it into his daily routine. He's in cloth diapers and change them as soon as I know they're wet so he gets used to feeling dry. Do I expect him to be completely out of diapers by 18 months? No, but I expect him to be well on his way.

My mom has told me that it was more the parents were trained to know their childrens elimination patterns...(apparently there is a pattern)...

Re: Did anyone have their DC toilet trained by 18 months?
I think it definately can't hurt to start introducting it, but don't get your hopes up too high. DS was trained by the time he was 2 1/2 which I soon learned was early among many of his peers. DD is 15 months and communicates when she has to go poop (with a lady like grunt and then a dash to the corner ) so we casually sit on the potty but by no means is she anywhere near active training.

Re: Did anyone have their DC toilet trained by 18 months?
YES!! My DD was pretty much fully potty trained by 18 mos! We purchased a potty early and left it in the bathroom, when she had to go she would take her diaper off and ask to go on her potty, after while she would just not even ask and just go in the potty and continue playing. Its poss.. my DS on the other hand was almost 3, and he was still giving me a hard time.. I started taking the cup away at night, and making his last drink at dinner time, hence he stopped having accidents.
Good luck!!

Re: Did anyone have their DC toilet trained by 18 months?
Ella's 19 months, and we're getting her a potty soon. My mom had my older sister trained by the time I was born (we're 19 months apart).
I'd like Ella trained by the time #2 arrives in May, but I'm not holding my breath.

Re: Did anyone have their DC toilet trained by 18 months?
DD is 20 months and she's so not ready. I'm going to try this summer after she's 2 (in May). I tried putting her on the potty ring on our toilet and she was so scared. Definitely not ready. My son was 3 when he trained (exactly on his 3rd birthday!).

Re: Did anyone have their DC toilet trained by 18 months?
I am going to introduce a potty to DS this summer...he will be around 15 months. It's very young and I am not expecting him to be potty trained over night but the earlier you introduce it I feel the less likely they will be stubborn about it later on. People wait until their kids are alot older these days out of convenience b/c it takes a lot of time and effort to potty train.

Re: Did anyone have their DC toilet trained by 18 months?
My mother had us trained early on as well. I never remember my younger siblings in diapers past the age of 2.
I think she was just willing to clean up accidents all the time. She used training pants a lot.

Re: Did anyone have their DC toilet trained by 18 months?
My DD is 20 months and for a couple months she tells me when she goes poo, but nothing else, she knows how the potty, knows exactly what to do when she's in there, but won't go. She did it once at my moms over xmas.
We bought her the seat for the toilet, but i'm not pushing it til she's 2, this may, and try over the summer, less layers to put on and off.
I was potty trained the summer before i turned 4.
Honestly, she'll do it when she's ready and right now, i know she's interested but not ready.

Re: Did anyone have their DC toilet trained by 18 months?
My niece who just turned 2 on Dec 21st was potty trained before then. She wears a pull up but has not had a #2 in a diaper for almost 3 months and will tell my SIL when she needs to go.. My DD gave me the hardest time from last Feb untill the day i went into the hospital to have the twins after that she was totally trained...except at night...

Re: Did anyone have their DC toilet trained by 18 months?
I really think the older generation's memories are faulty when it comes to alot of things actually...
I think it's fine to introduce the potty and all at 18 mos and even before that. But to actually expect the child to be fully potty trained by then - I have to laugh.

Re: Did anyone have their DC toilet trained by 18 months?
It's been a month that we started but we are not really pushing it too much. There is no way I will be starting at 3. I want DS trained by 2, latest 2 1/2 years. Wish me luck!

Re: Did anyone have their DC toilet trained by 18 months?
I agree about the older generation's memories. They tell us what suits them when they want to give advice. I do think that with potty training, the parents can be easily trained to know when the kid has to go and get the kid to a toilet. I think they do it in "attachment parenting." I guess it can eventually lead into the kid really being potty trained. As much as I hate diapers I hope to be able to wait until I have cues the my DS is ready. Some parents push so hard and stress the kid.
