Literacy course
Hi all! I'm thinking of teaching a college course. If you were interested in taking a course on literacy, what would you want it to cover? This is not definite yet, but something I'm toying with...thanks!

Re: Literacy course
writing definitely... i feel i know enough about reading.... it's writing that's much harder to teach.
i would look for ways to tie creative writing activities to correspond with what the kids are reading.

I totally agree. Writing is hard to teach. I would love to learn some new ideas/techniques/methods.

It's funny that you say this because even though we obviously teach different grade levels, I think I'm ok with teaching writing, but I am TERRIBLE with reading strategies. (I think part of the reason is because I feel like at this point, I shouldn't HAVE to teach reading, but for some of them, I really do.) We should FM/talk sometime. We do know the same kind of kids.

Re: Literacy course
Well, I teach high school English -- hence the apparent need NOT to teach reading when the reality is pretty different. They just don't have the skills (or they claim to hate it -- which breaks my heart).

Re: Literacy course
I am in a literacy program at Hofstra...and it's great! I took a Reading and writing workshop over the summer break and it was really useful!
