Money When Traveling Out of the U.S

What do you do? ATM, Travelers Cheques, other?

I'd like to hear!

I'm going to Europe this summer for a big trip and I'm not sure what to do!

We went to Italy 2 summers ago and the ATM thing drove us crazy because we were only allowed a certain amount of funds per day.

ATM all the way. You can use your Debit Card and Credit Cards at machines, so you should be able to get a good sum of money each day.

Also, your bank will get you the best rate, so use the ATMs, get some money at the airport just to hold you over.

ATM machines is the way to go. I use CC not ATM cards though.

Make sure you know your pin number of your CC. Some stores ask you to enter the pin number when doing purchases.

I usually have some money (about $200) in the country's currency to take with me and to use immediately (cab from the airport, etc.). Then I use travellers checks and the ATM.

ATM usually... also credit cards. traveller's cheques are becomign less and less common... and you're screwed if you lose them!

ETA: Euros are commonly availbable at US banks, particularly in Manhattan. I would call your bank and see which branch of their's does this... that way, you withdraw right from your bank account and they give you the equivalent in Euros...this way you don't pay on the exchange

yes this is true, but if your card doesn't have a computer chip in it, you can sign for it. My parents use their US CC's all the time here, where we use Chip and Pin everywhere and they just sign.

ATM's for the country's currency for taxis and small purchases...

Then my Credit card for restaurants, museums, etc.
You get the best exchange rate that way and it's better than carrying around a ton of cash.

This is what we do as well. Just remember though, many places in Europe don't accept Amex, so be sure to bring a MC or Visa with you.

Definitely ATM.

We used to be all about using our CCs too until we read about the fees to use them. Definitely check to see what your CC foreign transaction fees are.

Ditto. Before we travel out of the country, I call my CC companies and bank to make sure they note that I'll be out of the country - I'm paranoid that they'll think my card is stolen and cut off my funds. Check with your bank and CC company about fees associated with using foreign ATMs - I've found that they're more reasonable for us than traveler's cheques, and more convenient.

Re: Money When Traveling Out of the U.S

ATM and credit cards. But watch out fo rthe fees your bank charges. We got hit this summer in Switzerland and Italy with a $5 charge everything we used the ATM plus a % foreign transaction fee.Chat Icon

I called the bank when we returned and got our statement and they were able to take off about half of the charges.

Re: Money When Traveling Out of the U.S

I carry one credit card and about $100-200 in traveler's checks depending on the length of my trip. I go to the local bank in whatever country I'm in to cash them for currency.

Re: Money When Traveling Out of the U.S

We usually carry ~$300 cash (for travel to & from airport, incidentals, etc) and use the credit card for everything else. You will get a much better exchange rate by using your CC.

ITA. Visa or Mastercard if the way to go. I don't even bother bringing my Amex card.

I went with about 200 euro cash just in case, and ended up coming home with $40 of it.
