Question about chemo

One of my dear cowrokers had her second mastectomy on Friday

She mentioned that she will likely start chemo in early March.
I feel bad asking, because I feel like it makes me sound self centered and ignorant, but I know how mch I care about her, and how hard I am praying for her to come through this again.

But I need to know- I don't have much knowledge on chemo. Willl she still be coming to work while undergoing treatments?
I will be 9 months pregnant- I'm pretty sure that means I can't be near her- is that true?

Re: Question about chemo

So long as she feels up to it, then yes, she can most certainly go to work.

Is she undergoing chemo or radiation therapy? that would be the difference. If she is getting chemo, then you will be okay. If she is undergoing radiation treatment, then you would have to keep away for some time.Chat Icon

This is only true if she gets a radiation implant. If she's just undergoing normal radiation treatments, there is no risk to the baby. The patient won't be radioactive. Chat Icon

I think the risk with pregnant women and chemo is in administering/handling and taking the drugs involved in the treatment. I do not believe there is any danger in being around someone who is undergoing chemo, though you maybe shouldn't attend her chemo sessions (not sure).

Ask your OB if you're unsure.

As for working, it depends how she handles the treatment. Many people are okay (except for a day or two after the treatment) and find themselves able to work. Others get sicker and require more time off.
