Help! Teething and Fussiness

Help!

DS is 4.5 months old and his first tooth just broke through. He went from the easiest baby in the world to crazy-fussy practically overnight. And it seems to be getting worse -- I think another tooth is ready to come through.

He actually gets a decent night sleep -- its the daytime that is killing me. (I think he just so exhausted from crying all day that the night is a relief for him) He's just in pain sooo much and it hits him like a brick -- he can go from smiling and playing to screaming his head off in a nano-second.

The doc has said Tylenol and OraGel are okay, but I'm afraid of giving too much. Also I'm trying all kinds of different teethers and they work, but for only a minute or so. He doesn't like the cold ring; he mostly ***** on his fists, blankets, and stuffed animals or rings -- none of these seem like real fixes for the problem; they just distract him for a minute or two.

The worst part is that his nursing is all messed up -- he is EBF and he has gone from 20 minutes of nursing to only 6-7 minutes before his gums hurt too much to finish. (The doc says I shouldn't worry about him not eating enough b/c this is only temporary, but it kills me that he pulls off the breast crying and I can't help him.)

My poor little guy!
Any advice?????

TIA

I can only give hugs Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon and say I hear ya. My DS is exactly the same right now. He's happiest, though, if I let him bite on my fingers. I make sure my hands are clean of course an he goes to town.

I swear by Hyland's teething tablets. Go to CVS and give them a try. They made a big difference for Taylor.

I just went through this about a week ago. I read on the boards here to try freezing some apples or bananas in the mesh bag feeders....they work wonders!! I am not sure who posted it, but I would love to thank them, DS was much happier with them and his second tooth popped through with not as much fuss as the first one. HTH!Chat Icon

Re: Help! Teething and Fussiness

Thanks for the advice. Question about the frozen fruits though -- do you do that before the baby is on solids?? (my DS is EBF)

Any more thoughts or advice??? We're going on week 3 of this and the sleep deprivation is starting to take its toll.

TIA

Re: Help! Teething and Fussiness

Six!!! OMG!! I can only hope for your sake that once these come in you get a break.

btw -- how do you know how many are coming -- do you see them or feel them? I don't know how many my DS is working on -- he doesn't let me feel his gums too often and I only see the one that's popped through, but I have to assume there's at least 1 more coming b/c he's sooooo fussy!

Thanks for the Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Help! Teething and Fussiness

I can see and feel them right at the gumline... But only when my DS flips him upside down can I see the top ones. He doesn't let us get in his mouth very much at all. I also took him to the ped last week b/c on top of 6 teeth coming in he also has an ear infection and cold......Chat Icon . Dr confirmed for us that all 4 on top and the two side bottom ones are all coming through. Since that time the two top middle ones and one side bottom one have come through. So I guess we have 3 almost down and 3 more to go.... Hang in there. Everyone keeps telling me that this too shall pass and we won't even remember it........ Not sure about that, but I guess I can hope...
