need some advice

I'm teaching a graduate course at Queens College. This is my first time teaching, so it's quite the learning process for me.

I handed back the students' first homework assignments today. Some students were unhappy with their performance/grade, and asked if they could take another stab at answering the question. I told them to go ahead, as the purpose is for them to learn the material, and it was the first assignment, so some were unclear about what I wanted.

Another student, who received the lowest grade, just came to me and said that he answered the question without having the text and looked up info online (which I had already figured out, b/c I found the site he got everything from). He did not ask for another attempt to complete the assignment.

My question is: Since I granted permission to 2-3 other students who took the INITIATIVE to ask for another attempt to do the assignment, should I offer this option to the other student, or should I not bother, since he did not make an attempt to improve his grade?

Thanks for your opinions/advice!

Re: need some advice

Yes, I would offer it to him. Maybe he feels awkward asking, or doesnt even think it's an option.
and if he doesnt know that the others got a second chance, he may get angry later. Maybe you should offer it to the entire class, so everyone feels that they got a fair chance.

Re: need some advice

i think the question here might be did he plagerize? seems like he might have if you were able to easily find the site he got the information from. i would offer the opportunity to re-do, or ask him if he would like to re-do IF you think he did NOT plagirize. if you think he may have plagerized, absolutely no second chance.

He didn't plagarize...but I was able to figure out where he got the info from based on certain phrases that he used and included.

Re: need some advice

to avoid any issues I would offer the chance to redo the assignment to the entire class. you don't want to appear to be playing favorites, IMO.

I agree. I also have a chart of what I expect from the assignment, and how many points they will receive if they cover everything (like relate to three cases from the text: 3 points relate to relevant laws covered from the readings: 4 points, etc). This goes in the syllabus, where I also give the breakdown of points and final grade. Once they know exactly what you expect it is easier to grade and for them to write what you want to see.

How is the resubmission working--will you average the grades, or go with the higher grades? Either way I would make an announcement to the class so everyone will receive the same opportunity.

Re: need some advice

yes if other students asked you to redo the assignment then its only fair that you should then offer it to students who did poorly - and didnt ask you to redo the assignment

Re: need some advice

Whatever you do, just be fair. I would give everyone the opportunity to improve on this first assignment - either that, or I wouldn't put the opportunity out there at all.

Congrats on your position!!

ITA. I went to QC for grad school and I had professors who did this on occassion. If I had found out that they had let some students redo it and I didn't know about it, I think I would be pi ssed.

As for the plagarizing - can you talk to others in your department how they would handle it?

I agree. I think it was great that the other students spoke with you about it and you are being flexible with them, but the final student made no effort on either the assignement or during the subsequent conversation. This is grad school, not high school
(JMO~ I'm kinda b*tc*Y like that)

Re: need some advice

Personally, I'd offer it this one time to everyone, but then, make it extremely clear that you are not going to be making that a regular procedure. Make sure that your expectations are extremely clear. If you were talking about a high school class, it'd be different. These are graduate students, they need to know that you don't usually get redos in life, so deal with it. That's how life really works, imo.
