Re: For those with breast implants....

I don't have implants, but would never use silicone gel since it can block signs of cancer later on. Plus, there have been cases of the silicone leaking and causing cancer.
The saline implants are clearer and safer IMO. I do believe the saline implants have to be "recharged" after a few years though.

Re: For those with breast implants....

The new memory gel are FDA approved and truly perfected in order not to have leaks that were prior... I have a really great DR and he really knows his stuff I'm just torn... I have been reading alot and all risks are similar

Re: For those with breast implants....

My mom has the new silicone. She preferred them but I am not sure why. She had hers done as a reconstruction after breast cancer, and I think it had to do with them matching her remaining natural breast better.

Then I may be wrong...I only said this cuz my friend who had BC, just had reconstructive surgery and wouldn't get the silicone because she said her Dr. thought they might still be questionable in the future.

Some Drs are still trepidatious when it comes to the new silicone. I think it also has to do with how much original breast tissue is left after the mastectomy. My mother had none, and had her breast completely reconstructed from skin and fatty tissue from her back.

See my friend doesn't have enough body fat for reconstruction and she had no breast tissue left at all, so it would all have to be silicone or saline. She opted to just have her other breast lifted and reduced and get a smaller prosthetic.

I agree.... my mother had a double matectomy and used saline for these reasons. After abotu 5 years, she had to have them replaced, but this was also differernt than most people because she lost so many lymph nodes around the breast, the implant was actualyl shifting.

in this day in age of cancer and such, i would do saline in a second, even if these new silicone ones are considered safe.

I see. Every case is different, especially with a reconstruction. I am pretty sure that the Drs. had the saline ones available at the surgery in case she ended up not being a candidate for the silicone ones.

Re: For those with breast implants....

I has this conversation not too long ago with a plastic surgeon that consults in my hospital, and I asked him his opinion on saline vs silicone. He says the silicone are safe, but the silicone do not give as nice an appearance as the saline does in his opinion. They appear droopier than saline does, and IMO one of the good things about having them done is that you don't sag as much, I wouldn't want to sag years before I have too.
A good surgeon will not make you choose high profile, how many cc's ect, he or she will know what is right for your body. When I had mine done, my doc told me just to trust him, that he will do what looks natural for me and not to worry. I trusted what he said although it wasnt originally what I had in mind, but I am glad I did, because I look completely natural and noone can even tell that I had them done.
Reconstruction after breast cancer is an entirely different story, that is a complicated issue and I am sure that there are many factors that play into which type the surgeon uses.

ETA: You will not really get an idea what they will look like for months because you will have swelling and they have to drop. They look extremely strange for the first month at least, and by 3 months they start to look normal again. I find its also harder to go bra shopping because fake boobs are fuller on top than real, and they fit in a bra awkwardly IMO. It gets better as time goes on, but its still a big change from before. Oh yeah, and you will have no idea what size you will be for at least a month or two from when the swelling goes down and they drop.

I know this sounds really really crazy...but when my girlfriend was getting her implants she couldnt decide either..so she had her DH take her to a topless bar so she could ask the dancers what they thought..that way she could also see exactly what they were talking about etc..

My sister has saline - They look beautiful.
I'm not sure about the profile though?
All I can say is that she had an excellent surgeon - You wouldn't know they are fake.

Re: For those with breast implants....

Lauren - I had both. 1st Saline and now silicone gel.

My exp. Silicione gel feels so much better and more natural. It's softer and less chance of rippling. I got both surgeries under the muscle.

1st time I was 20 and had them for 7 years and the birth of 1 son. Got them re-done in Nov. w/ lift at 27yo.

1st time I had saline 480cc mcghan, moderate profile. under the muscle. (they rippled bad on the sides and you could literally feel the bag after a few yrs.

Now I have 400cc Mentor Silicone Gel Moderate-plus profile. also under the muscle. Also had a lift. no ripples, they feel amazing and you def can't feel the bag at all!

IMO Silicone Gel is WAYYYY better.

FYI - Silicone Gel is memory gel, it's is a new cohesive gel that is much like a gummy bear's filling. It DOES not and CAN not leak. If you were to split a gummy bear in two it wouldn't leak, it is a solid thick filling. Same as memory gel. Either way, silicone or saline, ALL implants are encased in a silicone shell so that is what is exposed to your organs anyway.

Re: For those with breast implants....

I just don't understand how they can decide for sure on a cc size before surgery.

Usually they just discuss with you what you want to look like through pictures, and then while they are doing the operation they adjust the size to get that look. 450 cc is going to look different on different people, its not one size fits all.
I was an A nearly B before my surgery, and my implants are around 250 cc and I am a perfect C. I also have saline and you are getting silicone, so that might make a big difference too in what the cc is and how it looks. IMO if you get 450 cc of saline in already B size boobs you will wind up a D or DD at least.
