is it true

that if you have a "bully breed" dog you are going to have a hard time getting homeowners insurance? I have a pitbull and I think this isn't exactly fair. Most "bully breeds" are the sweetest dogs out there and shouldn't be discriminated because of irresponsible dog owners. I really hope this isn't true

I don't about harder to get insurance but you will pay more.

It is harder to find apartments that allow those breeds though. My apartment bldg does not allow aggressive breeds. My dog is a rottie or dobe (not sure which, she's adopted)mix, so we got around it. We made up a pet resume for our dog when we were looking for places. We had references for our dog from our previous landlords/apt managers, her training and her records of shots on it.

Re: is it true

I would say no-- No one asked me if we had any animals when buying homeowner's insurance, and no inspector came to my house either...

Re: is it true

I have a Pit/ Lab and I was never asked about dogs when I got my homeowners. Most places just do a drive by and take a picture.

Re: is it true

Some insurance companies ask about certain breeds of dog, but they do so for different reasons. Often, it's b/c the dog is on the top ten bite list or something like that -- which does affect your insurance b/c the dog is statistically more likely to bite than another breed.

However, not every insurance company asks this question. I also don't think it's necessarily a bar to insurance (though maybe with some companies?) -- it may raise your premium, though.

ETA - Lying about it if they do ask and/or hiding your dog if your home is inspected, however, is insurance fraud, which is a very serious crime.

(Not saying the OP was planning to or would do this -- just mentioning it b/c it was brough up by a PP...)

I was only asked about certain breeds, but I don't remember which ones. I do know one of them was German Shepherds. I remembered b/c I loved them and was curious why they were on the list. Only 3 or 4 breeds were mentioned - and I don't recall pit bulls being one of them.

I have always been asked if I had any pets, specifically any dogs. When I told them I had a dog, they wanted to know the breed, I told them it was a beagle - no additional questions. Had it been another breed I think it would have impacted my premium.
