Any Plus-Sized Mommies Here?

I must admit, that I have been plus sized my whole life. From the time I was a kid, I have never been skinny. I have always struggled with losing weight and have been successful a handful of times but tend to go back to my chubby self again.

My question is, are there any other plus sized ladies here? I am a bit concerned with the health/risk to my baby since I am overweight and will inevitably gain more weight! And of course, now is not the time to lose weight. I am only 5 weeks along so it will be a long road... Is there anyone else going thru this added stress as well? Chat Icon

I would consider myself plus size I guess.

I am overweight by probably 40 pounds.....but am on the taller side. I wear between a 16-18 right before I got preggo.

I actually have not gained any weight as of my 21 week appointment. Dr. is not concerned..........

Especially in the beginning, I had a smaller appetite, ate so much less of the crap I used to indulge in and was generally eating very healthy. Even now at 23 weeks I am not snacking, only eating what I need, no extra (OK....well most days no extraChat Icon Chat Icon )!!

Just eat healthy and take care of yourself and in turn the baby will be healthy & taken care of!Chat Icon

Re: Any Plus-Sized Mommies Here?

I am now. I gained a LOT. And I was a little on the chunky side when I got prego. You should talk to your doctor about diet if you're concerned- I have to say that not even in the department of baby's health- it is making these last few weeks extrememly hard on my body, being out of shape and having all this extra weight. If I could go back in time, I would have eaten better and gotten some regular excercise- even just some light walking on the treadmill.

Re: Any Plus-Sized Mommies Here?

I am plus sized and Ii had a great pregnancy. I actually ate less than I did pre-pregnancy. I couldn't eat raw veggies and fruits during my pg b/c they killed my stomach so needless to say I didn't eat very healthy. I only gained 12 lbs my entire pg and 1 month after my Chat Icon birth I am down 24lbs. It's great to weigh less than before I got pg, but I still would love to lose a lot more weight.

Re: Any Plus-Sized Mommies Here?

Thanks for the responses girls! It is reassuring that there are other women like me out there. Chat Icon I have my first appt with my new OB on 3/5 [can't believe that is next Wed. already!] I am definitely going to talk to the doctor about eating better and exercise. I haven't exercised since Sept. [right before my wedding] and wanted to start either walking on my treadmill or at least walk my dog. But I hear that after you become PG is NOT the time to start an exercise program. Maybe yoga would be ok...Chat Icon It is really great to read that you girls had done so well!! You've made me feel alot better!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Any Plus-Sized Mommies Here?

I am plus sized as well. I haven't always been a chunky monkey, just later in life. Chat Icon So far, this pregnancy has been great. I haven't gained very much overall, I lost a lot in the first trimester due to lack of appetite and I haven't gained it all back. My doctor hasn't been concerned about my weight at all, my only concern is to make sure my blood pressure stays normal. I have never had blood pressure problems but we are at a higher risk because we are bigger women.

Good luck and I hope you have a safe and healthy pregnancy!

Re: Any Plus-Sized Mommies Here?

Hi there. I am, unfortunatley. With my first pg, I did a lot of walking (dogs) every day and I only gained 15 pounds!!! It was weird, I had no desire for sweets or junk food and I was eating a lot better than before I was pg.

This pg, I'm really nervous. We've moved and we don't have to walk the dogs anymore (we have a backyard now). I really want to start walking again but I am going to wait to talk to the dr next week. I was also thinking about yoga but I'm not sure if I should do a pre natal yoga or if any yoga class will work.

I am very similar.... tall and about a 16/18. I'm 9 weeks, and last I checked, I lost 3 lbs (due to food aversions). I was told by my Dr. that heavier moms are only supposed to gain 15-20.

I currently fit into almost all of my pre-preggo clothes.... I'm more worried about when we have to switch to maternity clothes...

does anyone know a place with a good selection of larger maternity stuff?

Re: Any Plus-Sized Mommies Here?

I'm plus-sized and was also worried about more weight gain and health issues. So far, so good. I have gained about 10 pounds (I am 35 weeks). I eat about the same as I did before, but my body is working harder. My dr is not worried. No GD and the baby looks great.

The one thing that has really stunk is clothing. I am short and plus-sized. Pants have been tough. I wore pre-preg pants for awhile (the waists were big pre-pregnancy because I am pear-shaped), so they worked for awhile. I found a few pairs of pants at motherhood maternity and ordered a couple from lane bryant maternity that worked well. I ordered some clothing from JCPenny maternity, but they didn't work for me. Some tops in XL or XXL from Target were good. Also, I bought two plus-sized sweat suits from Target that are great.

Congrats on your pregnancy!

I am a plus size and when I was PG with my son I only gained 17 pounds. Clothes were tough to find but I lived in sweats so that helped. I did end up getting Toxemia but my OB said it wasn't weight related.

Re: Any Plus-Sized Mommies Here?

I found a lot of stuff at Motherhood. I lived out of state and the store near me had a plus size section. I also bought from JCPenny's and Lane Bryant. A lot of the old navy clothes fit me in size xxl. I loved their t-shirts and yoga pants. I also found a lot of stuff on Ebay. Some of it brand new with tags!

I am also plus size and preggo. At 12 weeks Im still in my normal clothes and I think i've actually lost a few pounds (2-3).- I've been eating less and cutting out the vino has also helped. My doctor doesnt want me to gain more than 15 lbs total - so thats my goal.

Good luck to you.

Me too :) When I went to the dr. the other day for my 12 week appt, I didn't gain any weight. I have been looking for maternity clothes and I have been finding things on JCPenney maternity that are nice.

Re: Any Plus-Sized Mommies Here?

I am reading all of the posts and I guess I didnt do so well. I am plus sized as well and at 27 weeks, I have gained 24 lbs. Chat Icon

I will have my work cut out for me once I deliver. Oh well.

By the way for clothes, I have had a ton of luck at Motherhood Maternity in the Broadway Mall as well as the outlet in The Source Mall in Westbury. I need to try everything on being I'm short.

Re: Any Plus-Sized Mommies Here?

I was and still am.

I was up and down with my weight the entire pg and only gained 2 lbs from the first time I was weighed until the day before I delivered...but I was fat to begin with.

I'm now down almost 27 lbs since my son was born almost two weeks ago, but still overweight, unfortunately.

Re: Any Plus-Sized Mommies Here?

Im plus-sized and I was very concerned about the pregnancy. I was not expecting to get pregnant for another year and I had just started to think about getting in better shape and health right before I found out. I had and still have high blood pressure and that has been the biggest concern. How ever, other than that I have had a great pregnancy. I lost about 12 pounds in the first trimester since I was so sick. I have put some of that back on now that Im 30 weeks but I still weigh a little less than when I started. I did not develop gestational diabetes either. Until now my blood pressure has been under control but its stating to go on the rise now.

Re: Any Plus-Sized Mommies Here?

For clothes, I have been shopping at Old Navy, GAP, Lane Bryant and Ann Taylor. All of them have maternity in XXL size. LB has larger of course. I have had to return a few things because they were too big but otherwise I haven't had TOO many problems.

Re: Any Plus-Sized Mommies Here?

I am overweight also. With DD I only gained about 20 pounds and so far in this pregnancy at 26 weeks I have not gained any weight. Most plus-sized girls do not gain a lot during pregnancy and I honestly think it's because we know how difficult it is to lose weight so we really don't want to add to the weight we already need to lose. I see so many skinny girls gain 50-60 pounds when they are pregnant and then they struggle to get the weight off after. I know one small girl that gained 80 pounds!!

As far as risks, overweight woman are at more risk to having gestational diabetes but there's nothing you can do about that so don't stress over it. You might also be at risk for high blood pressure but I'm sure your doctor will monitor that very closely.

I would suggest walking as your exercise. Most women don't realize how much you need your legs when you give birth. It's going to be a lot on your legs and I always recommend everyone to walk while they are pregnant. Anything you can do to strengthen your leg muscles will help your delivery. The other thing you could do is pre-natal yoga. It will help you stretch and breathe. I would not suggest doing anything else if your body is not use to it. Now is not the time to start working out or dieting. Just try not to go overboard with the sweets and I'm sure you'll do fine.

Thanks for the great advice! I am definitely going to speak with and confirm with my OB that I can start walking and doing prenatal yoga. There are so many plus sized girls that didn't gain any or hardly any weight!! Great job ladies!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Any Plus-Sized Mommies Here?

I was fluffy to begin with.

So far at 27 weeks, I've gained less than 10 lbs. But in the beginning I lost because of nasty M/S.

My OB said that having the extra weight while baby is in there is OK because if baby needs extra calories, they just take it from your "resources". It's an odd way of looking at it I guess but so far so good. We're both healthy and that's all that matters. I'm happy I won't have a ton to loose after Chat Icon is born.

So far, Gap maternity has been my best friend. I'm disappointed with Motherhood because 98% of their stuff is polyester and if there is one thing that brings out the pregnant psycho chick, it's static. LOL. Also I agree with Target's maternity stuff too. Their cotton tees and tanks are WONDERFUL. I Live in them..

Hope that was helpfulChat Icon

Re: Any Plus-Sized Mommies Here?

I am a plus sized mommy. When I was preggo w/Hayley I gained about 20 pounds and then I developed gestational diabetes and I started losing the weight before I even delivered. After she was born I ended up weighing less than when I got pregnant.

This time around I am trying to watch what I eat even more than I did when I was pregnant with Hayley. I go for my 2nd appointment today so I will see how much I gained in 5 weeks.
