Is it safe

to go to the Dentist during pregnancy? Are there certain months that you should avoid going?

Re: Is it safe

You can go for a cleaning but its not safe to have Xrays - although if its emergency dental work, you have to have it done - and they will do it.

Re: Is it safe

I'm not pregnant yet but hoping to be here soon! I just went to the dentist today to have a cleaning and to check that I have cavities before TTC.

I got yelled at for not flossing enough because he says I have some gingivitis Chat Icon and it only gets worse in pregnancy for some reason.

Anyway, I need to have a crown put on a tooth and he said thats safe just no x-rays like Mrs. J said! Chat Icon

I went to the dentist the day before we started TTC. My dentist, who just had a baby, confimed that we can still get treatment during our pregnancies, but no x-rays.

Re: Is it safe

I had to get xray, and a root canal when I was preggo with my son Chat Icon

They had so many layers of those lead shields on me I thought the chair sunk in ten feet to the ground!!!!

I had just started my second trimester. I remember the OBGYN had said that there were certain meds I could have and others that I COULD NOT, and he wrote it down I gave it to my dentist and have NO idea what it said! My son is almost three!Chat Icon

Re: Is it safe

my Dr told me its fine, even x-rays, since they so localized and you're well protected under lead. Though she did suggest waiting until the 2nd trimester.

She also said if I needed novacaine, to use novacaine without epinephrine.

Yup same here. I had a tooth pulled in my 2nd trimester and my son is fine.

As a dental hygienist I agree with all the posts here. Although I don't pratice taking xrays on any pregnant women unless she is in pain. Then I double lead apron her. Cleanings are so so important while pregnant. I've seen pregnancy gingivitis so bad that the gums cover almost all of the tooth from inflammation....... BTW You can FM me with dental concerns at any time GinaChat Icon

Re: Is it safe

I had to have oral surgery at 5 months. They did take x-rays but put like three of those vests on me and made me hold another over my belly.
