What would you do if.....

you were sitting in a meeting

when in passing it was mentioned that your department might be going away

it's been confirmed that it's a strong possibilty

Re: What would you do if.....

I had a similar situation.

My last job, I was mislead and when I walked in, the program was basically given a notice of disenrollment a few weeks later.

Everyone connected with that was fired, and since the rest of us were all newly hired, and were known by the state people who oversaw the program, we thought our good reputation and work ethic would be enough to "clean things up".

It wasn't though.

The program still closed. They ended up offering me another position, for the same amount of pay, but it was not anything I was interested in at all, and I knew I would be miserable if I stayed there, so I took a week off and interviewed like crazy.

Re: What would you do if.....

I should add- I have only been there 6 months.....

and would not have taken this job if I had known this

I feel mislead, lied too, and now I am going to have to explain this on my resume

when I had 3 other offers at the time

Re: What would you do if.....

Ha! I feel ya!! I was only there for like 8 months. Since I stayed with the same population, and a lot of people who interviewed me knew the situation through "gossip and rumors", they were concerned about how I could possibly reflect negatively on them if they hired me from that company.

Thank goodness the bureacrats vouched for me though that I had nothing to do with that train wreck!

I also was able to say in my interviews about how this actually would be "positive" experience I could bring to their agency, because I saw firsthand what NOT to do to lose this program completely.

My second day at my current job the auditors who closed us down at the last place walked in! They remembered me too!!

I'd start looking right now. My husband is going through this. He's a VP in a major corp, that's going through some changes. The company that has acquired part of his current employer's portfolio wants to interview him. He will "probably" be ok for 6 months and may even survive the shake up. However, he doesn't want to work for the acquiring company, although all indications are they want him (they asked to interview very few people).

Right now he is interviewing hot and heavy and exploring establishing a consulting practice. In IT this seems to be the way the industry is going and with his skill set, he could pick up work tomorrow, making what he is making right now. But, who knows. What he has seen happen and heard consistently from the few headhunters he deals with is that companies are very slow to pull the trigger and hire if your making a certain salary. He is also seeing that jobs that were posted on certain, very industry specific job boards, are being relisted up to 50K less. So I guess I would start looking and not worry about explaining your short tenure with your current employer, its almost expected in this market.

Good luck!!!

I would get my resume ready right after that meeting.

I would see my Manager also and ask what is the time frame for the new structure.

Update your resume, and start interviewing. Is there anyone you can speak to get some answers?

I took a job last June, I had no idea what a mess the company was in or that they were for sale. In Jan they were bought and let mostly everyone go. So I was there for about 8 months.
Right now just explain that you don't feel this is the place for you. If you get let go that is not your fault you just what you thought would be best for you at the time.
