Got the news today
Michaels the craft store was bought out & as off March 1st all of the stores in the US & Canada are discontinuing all craft classes & kids clubs except Wilton Cake classes. I really liked teaching scrapbooking there, I'm a little bummed out.

I'm not sure who bought them, but they got rid of everything but Wilton-even beading which is so popular right now. They said nationally it didn't make money. My classes were often full but I know lots of instructors never had any students! Most of my student were good for spending at least $100 each after the class with the coupon you get for taking the class. I'd say thats pretty good but who knows. They are structuring all the managers & rearranging the stores too, hopefully it will get better not worse!

Re: Got the news today
I used to teach painting at Michaels--- but quit last year. Are they getting rid of the one stroke program too? That was one of the only 2 corporate programs- w/ the other being wilton...

everything but Wilton is gone, new staores that are built aren't even going to have classrooms, they are going to make the wilton aisles bigger & do the classes right in the aisle The will still have the crappy product demos they do in the middle of the store, but that's it.

Yeah thats true. It totally s**ks!!!! I'll bet you anything that Wilton or a Wilton parent company bought them out. It's too coincedental that the Wilton products are being expanded.

I heard AC moore stopped doing classes too??? Even if they are still doing them there isn't an AC Moore close enough to my house to make it worth it.

That would make sense. They mostly sell their products after people take a class.

Kelly where did you hear this?
Michaels is still handing out flyers for their children craft program called "the Knack"
It doesn't seem like our Michaels is discontinuing the classes unless they are just being real secretive about it and will pull the rug one day.

Re: Got the news today
that's really weird because I just got an email yesterday that LL Weans (the teacher's store) is starting a bunch of new classes at Michael's.

The knack is new, it was called kids club. I'm assuming the collaboration with the other store is new too. the kids classes were usually taught/run by the event coordinator-not a regular instructor. I heard it first hand from the manager of the store I taught in. It would make sense that they'd continue through march if instructors actually had full classes rather than issue refunds, but I know they will not be setting up any new classes for adults other than wilton. I was told the new policy affects all Michaels stores in the US & Canada.

Re: Got the news today
I was in Michaels today - did you guys know that Wilton owns one of the scrapbooking companies - "Just Tanger" (I think that was the name)? Definitely looks like a Wilton company bought Michaels, because now there is a section of not just the cake-decorating stuff, but other more general-purpose baking/cooking tools.

Re: Got the news today
I hope they don't phase out - but I think it would be foolish - people like the big brands (MM, basic grey, etc)
