Prescription drugs discounted?

My neighbor was in a horrible motorcycle accident last week. He is expected to be returning home Friday/Saturday. (way to soon in our opinion but that's another story)

Anyway...

They have no health insurance. They have applied for Medicaid etc..but these things take time. The hospital will only fill 3 days worth of prescriptions....He is going to be needing pain meds etc..$$$ is and was already an issue for them so this added expense is just overwhelming to say the least..

Does anyone know how to apply/get/receive etc..discounted medications? QUICKLY too?

Walmart does have those $4 meds but none of them are for pain relief.

TIA

Re: Prescription drugs discounted?

it depends on the meds, but some pharma companies discount for people under certain incomes. You go onto their websites, check out if they have the program and then the doc fills out the form, you include the financial info they require and the meds get sent to the doc. Then you pick them up. They can be free, or very low cost.

It can happen in as little as a week.

eta: They need to fight the hospital and keep him inpatient...they can't throw him out for nonpayment.

Go to Costco pharmacy.
I was just there. CVS wanted $58 then I went to Costco and paid $23. For the same med.

Pfizer's Assistance Program

Partnership for Prescription Assistance

Many other companies also have patient assistance programs. Here are some numbers I found:

Hoffman-LaRoche
1-800-282-7780

Abbott Laboratories
1-800-222-6885

GlaxoSmithKline
1-866-728-4368

Novartis
1-800-277-2254

Ortho-McNeil
1-800-577-3788

Immunex
1-800-321-4669

Bristol-Myers Squibb
1-800-272-4878

Schering-Plough
1-800-521-7157

Gilead Sciences
1-800-445-3235

Merck & Co.
1-800-727-5400

MedImmune
1-800-887-2467

MedImmune
1-800-887-2467

Ligand Pharmaceuticals
1-877-654-4263

Aventis
1-800-221-4025

If you do some Google searches, you will find other companies as well.

Now, here's the caveat -- Not every pharmaceutical company has a program that covers every drug. To find what he needs, they may need to call around to a few different places to see if they offer assistance on that type of drug and if he qualifies. Some will require that only the doctor (not the patient) call. He needs to speak to his doctor about this b/c the doc will need to be involved. Also, the doc should be able to give him a list of potential medications and which companies make them. The doctor may also be able to advise whether or not it would be cheaper to simply pay pharmacy price for a generic equivalent than it would be to get the drugs from a name brand pharmacy.

I'm so sorry to hear about this accident. I hope he gets the help he needs and heals quickly! Chat Icon Chat Icon

You probably know a lot more about it than I do.

ETA -- I don't know the ins and outs of how it works... just that it exists!

Re: Prescription drugs discounted?

it's an excellent program. Johnson & Johnson has a program where the limit is $20,400 for an individual and if they make the drugs you can get them for cheap! I mean ultra cheap..$10 maybe?

Pfizer has a program as well that's as good if not better.

With narcotics though, I don't know how it works. It's a controlled substance.

Most of that stuff is not that expensive..especially the older medications...
