how would i do the math to figure out how much i'd really be making??
i've interviewed for two jobs. it's looking good, but i won't know until next week if i'm offered either job.
one job pays more than the other: the one that pays more is a longer commute.
how would i do the math to figure out if it's worth the commute?

Take difference in the amount of miles you would be driving round trip, multiply that by 250 (approximate amount of working days in the year). Then take the total amount of yearly miles and divide that by your car's MPG. Then multiply that by $3.50 (current gas rate).
See if that difference is greater than what you would be making in the other company. You also have to factor in additional wear and tear on your car for driving more miles, as well as the comfort factor of having to spend more hours commuting.
Then make a decision on what you think is better.
ETA: Thanks Kara for pointing out my fuzzy math. Corrected.

ok...
job 1 is 28.34 miles away
job 2 is 8.82 miles away
difference is 19.52 miles
i'm in nj, so gas is a little cheaper... let's go with $3
i get 20mpg... so it's about a gallon of gass exrta.
$3x250 days= $750
that's really not a lot of money.
so i guess the actual commute, benefits, and enjoyment of job would be bigger factors.
thanks for helping me figure this much out

Always go higher. You don't know where gas prices will be later this year. Or next year. Or for the many years you may be at this new job.
In NJ I would go at least $3.25.

You can also consider the extra time spent commuting as extra time spent working!
So about 20 minutes extra driving each way = 40 minutes per day.

Plus the wear and tear on your car. I also break the job down to the per hour and divide that among the time spent commuting (but, i'm very anti-commuting  )
