For those with irregular cycles and TTC
I went to my OBGYN today to start with the tests to see if everything is ok and got an RX for DH too, LOL- boy will he love this!!!!
anyhow regarding ovulation he said we always ovulate 14 days after our period. Period day 1 as we all know. He said to go by your shortest cycle and your longest cycle , so example, my shortest is 27 longest is 36 so he said I am ovulating anywhere from day 13-22. and he said to use the first response OPK test. He also said not to TTC everyday but everyother day.
I also told him that 8 days after my period, I get cramps on either side, 1 month left side, next month right side, he said that means you are def ovulating BUT that doesnt mean that is when my egg is about to drop.
so he said to start doing the opk on day 11 and keep going until I get that surge, he then said to make sure I TTC on that day, the next and the next after that so 3 days total from when you get your surge. He also said that taking the temps are a waste. which Im glad to hear b/c frankly it was a PIA. Now my doctor is an Obstetrics and gyno, infertility specialist, surgery specialist and something else- ah I cant remember.
So the testing began, blood work and then I have to go to quest lab for more blood work then off to nassau radiology for some xray. I swear b/t my internist, the endocronlogist and now this, I feel like a pin cushion with all this blood drawn. Good Luck ladies!!! Baby Dust to all!!!!

Re: For those with irregular cycles and TTC
All I have to say is find a new doctor.
I made a gigantic mistake once, by going to a ob/gyn who claimed to be an infertility specialist, a high risk pregnancy specialist and he probably was a cardiologist according to him too.
The only fertility specialists are reproductive endocrinologist and immunologists and the only high risk ob/gyn I would see would be a perinatologist .
Your doctor is completely wrong. Actually most women do not ovulate cd14. Any reproductive specialist knows this, and can prove it with u/s and bloodwork.
I ovulated cd 10 and conceived...A woman on these boards just conceived cd 66.
Oh and did he say why taking temps are a waste ??? Perhaps it will actually empower you and you will be aware of what your body is doing ?
I don't want to start any trouble. I just need people to realize that , the endocrine system is not an alarm clock, our bodies don't work by a perfect calendar.
Okay this is my third edit because the more I read the post the more confused I am. Honestly, from what you are saying, I believe you misunderstood the doctor. He had you subtract 14 days from your longest and shortest cycle , that was your LP he was having you take away. Which left you with ovulation possibly cd13-22....THEREFORE, HE ISN'T SAYING ALL WOMEN OVULATE CD 14,...he saying all women have a LP of 14 days,...which again is not true....some women have LPs of 9 days and others, have LPs of 16 days....
Chart your temps and see what's going on :)

Re: For those with irregular cycles and TTC
I came onto this site knowing NOTHING about TTC or my own body for that matter. I can only say that doctor is wrong because my charts alone, including my pregnancy chart shows that I never ovulated on CD 14 or close to it. I never went by OPK's because I never got accurate readings, but my temps are what showed exactly when I ovulated, which was CD 22, and my pregnancy progressed accordingly with those dates.
It's so hard to pinpoint one day or a 3 day range because the female body is so complicated and each and every one of us, has different cycles.
Either way, I send you lots of baby dust and hope that you get your BFP very soon!

Re: For those with irregular cycles and TTC
I have to agree with the ladies above.
I ovulate on CD 20-22.
Also, my doc told me to stop temping and it was a waste. I did stop for a while, but when I started again, I realized that if nothing else, the temps confirm that the OPKs and your calculations are accurate.
It's been amazing to me the last couple months to see the dip EXACTLY where I thought it should be with the OPKs. It really confirms the timing of everything.
I know we have all been raised to think that doctors are experts and know everything, but just like I realized one day that my parents were human, I've realized that about doctors too.

where are your doctors located Suffolk or Nassau? He is in Nassau, His name is Peyman Zandieh. Ive been going to him since 97, I dont think he would steer me wrong, and his success rate of pregnant patients is very high. He used to be on stewart ave with dr. braverman, but he went on his own and there is another doctor dr. pomeranz but he is hardly ever there. no I must have said it wrong, he said most women ovulate after the 14 cycle day and due to "my" short and long cycles, he is predicting I am ovulating anywhere from cycle day 13 up until 22. You know I dont know how acccurate for sure the opks or the temps are- FF changes my ovulation date all the time AND they NEVER coincide with my OPK's- my OPK's say I ovulated at least 7 to 10 days before FF says I did. So for me it is soooooooo not accurate. But I never told him that, so that is not his reason why he said its a waste. If he did say why it was I dont remember, he was giving me so much info, I was taking it all in and asking questions too. He started blood work and is sending me for more before I go for a histoalpingogram something or other. and sending DH for a SA. so far I am happy with his urgency and not to wait a year to see if something "is"wrong. Ive been TTC since may. Didnt start the "real" TTC with OPK's and Temps until august. before that we were just winging it and really not TTC the right time of the month at all.- edited to say and - oh we still havent been. well see for next month.
edited to say, thanks Michelle, have you heard of him? I dont know what to think now,
