Italy

So we are getting a decent tax refund, and I'm thinking Italy might be a nice place for a trip next October, but I am so lost on where to start.

Do you think 3k can do it? We dont need 4 star hotels or anything like that. Anyone have any website to suggest?

Re: Italy

for two people? No way! Airfare alone could be that much for two people.

Re: Italy

I think you can if you go at an off time, stay at a hostel (you can get private rooms at a hostel), eat and shop on the cheap, maybe stay in one or two cities or just one area and do your research. You can do really cheap lunches by going to supermarkets.

I backpacked around Europe (in summer 2000) for 6 weeks and with airfare and everything else (food, shopping, train ticket etc.) that cost me about $6000. I didn't always stay in hostels, took taxis a few times, ate at a few cafes and shopped.

Sorry I don't have any websites, but maybe try the Lonely Planet series or Let's Go. They usually have cheaper options in there.

I'd plan on $6,000-7,000 especially with the exchange rate today.

Re: Italy

You can definitely at least double that amount...I spent well over $3k myself for Italy in November...the exchange rate is horrible...

Re: Italy

Looks like I might pull this off and book it! I found a 580 dollar round trip aifare, a hostel across the street from the vatican in a private room with a private bath for 110 dollars a night including breakfast, and we're looking at splitting half rome half venice or florence. Train fair is only 62 dollars a person to Venice.

We're looking at leaving on halloween and coming back the next sunday. Its not a direct flight, but for 300 dollars cheaper, I'll change planes. We're lucky to have flexibility in our jobs to go in an offseason and leave on friday.

Airfare would never be that much to Italy unless she totally got ripped off!

Re: Italy

I think possbily.... but it would be a stretch. DH and I went for a month this past summer. We spent about 1200 on the airfare and then about $1,000 in spending money----but DH's father is from Italy and so we stayed in the family house all month. We had no lodging expenses, but with the exchange rate, gas, groceries and tolls hit us a lot harder than usual.

right now people are getting $1.53 for a Euro... NOT good for us! $3,000 might be doable if you maybe explored some less touristy stuff as well as stayed in hostels instead.

also, check out this book!

The Guide to Lodging in Italy's Monasteries by Eileen Barish (it's on Amazon)

Dh and I love this book. We got it and actually stayed in some of their recommendations...they are former monstaries and convents that are now run as hotels.hostels. When we weren't staying at our house, we stayed in a few of these while we were doing a little sight seeing. We stayed in some of their suggestions and saved a LOT of money, stayed in a unique and often very beautiful, historic place---these are not your typical hotels, so it was a beautiful change of pace. To give you an example, we booked two rooms in Assisii, literally walking distance from the Basilca and town, and had a 4 course meal with wine for way less than 200 Euros ... this was for two rooms and diiner for 4... we would have spent at least that for just us in the other hotel in town.

Let me know if you need anything!
GOOD LUCK!

i realize that.... i travel there frequently... granted usually in the summer, but we've never spent more than $900 each and although the summer is the hottest, so not the ideal time to go, it is still the peak time for most people so the flights are usually most expensive the summer, well, in my experience they have been.

i've never flown in the fall. although we would like to go in november because Rome is the coolest then... what haev you seen as flights at that time?

we went in Spetember of last year and flights per person were $1200 round trip. And this was the cheapest we could find. (JFK to Roma)

Re: Italy

absolutely. we spent 8 days in Rome and Florence with day trips to Pompeii, Naples, Siena and San Gimignano.... total cost, including airfare and train tickets, food, hotels AND souveniers was just about $3500. And we stayed in 4 star hotels and had pricey dinners every night.

eta: I booked the airfare in Jan 07 for Nov 07 Travel. We flew into Rome and out of Florence and paid around 700per person. (direct flight jfk-rome, 1 stop florence-jfk. - there are no direct flights out of florence.) I do NOT recommend changing planes in Paris - that airport is the worst!!!
