Exercise in first trimester

Hi everyone! I'm new to this board, just found out I was pregnant. I'm just about 5 weeks. Have a question about exercise and pregnancy...

I'm a runner, usually run about 6-7 days a week, several miles.
What are your thoughts on exercising during pregnancy, especially so early on in pregnancy? Running?

Re: Exercise in first trimester

My Doctor told me exercising was fine. I have a treadmill and he told me to use it as much as possible. Walking is very good. Running, I dont know - talk to your doctor. They dont want you to overdo it, but they definately wont have a problem with exercising

I'm a runner also - I've had to cut down since I'm pg w/ twins and considered high risk, so I'm down to walking. Anyway, if you were running prior to being pregnant, you should be able to continue, unless something comes up that makes the dr say no. I would suggest not doing races, cutting mileage at least slightly and watching your heartrate by using a heartrate monitor. You don't want to get winded because if you're not getting oxygen, neither is the baby.

Congratulations!!!

Re: Exercise in first trimester

I worked with my trainer from the week of my IUIs through my 2ww and up until now. I stopped doing the treadmill and stairclimbers/stepping machine and changed to the recumbent bike once I felt my balance was off.

Thats amazing, twins! I've been running everyday until 2 days ago and now I'm considering cutting back and running/walking. Were you running in the beginning before you found out it was twins? And then at what point did you cut back to walking? and how much are you exercising? I'm sorry for all the questions, I just want to try to be as fit and healthy as possible during my 9 months.

Re: Exercise in first trimester

I tried running in my first trimester, and I just could not do it. My boobs were too swollen and sore to take the bouncing.

Other than that be careful that you do not trip and fall and keep you heartrate under 140 beats per minute.

My doctor said not to raise my heartrate over 150, that is also what I have seen online. I stuck to that throughout my first trimester and half of my second. Then I started going to 160 which is what a trainer at my gym said. I now keep it between 140 and 160.

I actually ran through my first trimester. I knew I was having twins and he said it would be fine, but I would most likely have to cut down later. I started getting those stupid side stitches every time I ran, so I ended up stopping as I approached the end of the first tri. Then in the second tri, the high-risk dr I see asked that I pretty much stop working out for a few weeks. This week, I finally got the green light to start walking, so I am going to try and do it 3-4x per week to start. I was again warned that as I move forward, I might have to stop again since twins has risk of pre-term labor....so it will depend on how each drs visit goes! It's been tough, I'm used to running so much, but I tell myself, I have my whole life to run and my health and the health of the babies is more important!!

As I said above, if you are working out now, you should be able to maintain it, just at a lower intensity. Unless you are high risk for whatever reason like I am, there is no reason why not. You just can't get pregnant, having never worked out and ask if you can start running! Good luck.
