St. Mary's Children's Hospital: A personal story
This was written by my secretary who is doing a walk to raise money for St. Mary's Hospital May 18. Her son passed away there last year.
To All of You Who Didn’t Know:
As a parent of a special needs child for 16 years it was always hard to have anything that was constant in our lives. That was until we were introduced to St. Mary’s Hospital for Children. Ellis, Jr. was about 5 or 6 years old when we first encountered the services of St. Mary’s Hospital for Children. We utilized their respite services. It was a very scary ordeal because Ellis had never been away before but the social workers, nurses and trained professionals at St. Mary’s helped us to feel comfortable leaving him for those 7 days. About a year or two later Ellis had hip surgery and what better place to do his rehabilitation than St. Mary’s Hospital. They were wonderful for the six to eight weeks that Ellis had to be there. There care didn’t stop there. Once Ellis went home St. Mary’s sent a Social Worker, Nurse, Home Health Aide and Physical Therapist. From this relationship we gained a health aide that stayed with us for the next 8 years. A physical therapist who stayed with us about 6 years. In June of 2007 Ellis, Jr. had to go back to St. Mary’s for rehabilitation. They were extraordinary until Ellis’ last day on earth August 20, 2007. The staff at St. Mary’s made Ellis’ transition wonderful not only for him but for our entire family. They did aroma therapy, they read poems, they sang songs and they made sure that we all had everything we could have ever needed for this day to be as peaceful as it could be. This is why we would like everyone that we know and don’t know to help St. Mary’s kids continue to get the care that Ellis, Jr. had.
On May 18th my family and friends will be walking for St. Mary’s Hospital for Children. We are helping to raise money for St. Mary’s Kids. This Hospital receives private funding so anytime there is opportunity to help it is greatly appreciated. St. Mary’s not only helped my family through what was the worst time of mine and my family’s life but through Ellis’ 16 years they helped tremendously with things like Physical Therapy at home, a Home Health Aide that was with us for approximately 9 years, as well as social workers, supplies and other things that escape me right now. As you all know Health Care is very important. St. Mary’s Hospital For Children I feel is a great example of what great Health Care is all about. The walk on May 18th is at Belmont Race Track in Hempstead, NY. It is a Family Fun Day. Everything is free. They have many activities for the children while everyone is walking. The good thing about this walk is that you don’t have to walk to donate. I am collecting money now and I am hoping that you will all please help St. Mary’s Kids. If there is anyone who would like literature on the hospital I do have some testimonies from other parents and children or I can tell you my story. The donation can be in the form of Check, Money Order, Cash or Credit Card. For a Credit Card you go to www.stmaryskids.org , after that you click on Team and my Team’s name is Mizz City Rydaz.
