Obviously I didn't get the job...

The job has been posted 2 times since my 2nd interview. I just don't get it. My interviews went so well. How do you go from being one of the top candidates to nothing. What went wrong? Chat Icon I really wanted/needed that job. It sounded like I basically got the job when I was there and by their emails? Then all of a sudden, nothing. I've given up on the job, but I was wondering how would you know or find out if someone has given you a bad reference? Even though they told me how much a family friendly office they were, maybe they didn't like the fact that I already have 2 little one's? I don't know. I just can't see what went wrong? I wish they would tell you why they don't want to hire you. Chat Icon Why doesn't anyone want to hire me? I know I keep saying it, but it's really depressing. Sorry... thanks for letting me vent! Chat Icon that exact situation happened to me quite a few times so i know exactly how you feel and i'm so sorry. I think its best to stop wondering why you didn't get the job, what went wrong, etc. A lot easier said then done - I speak from experience here, but it will eat you up inside and that's no good either. someone on this board gave me a great last question to ask that should help you moving forward:

"How do you see me fitting in here?"

Granted, sometimes I got weird answers that were not applicable to my question (i.e. - you'd be a senior account executive. duh. that's what I was applying for, but I know they didn't want to answer me) but sometimes I got really great feedback. A few people actuially commented on what a great question that was to ask so kudos to whomever suggested it!

good luck!!!!

Re: Obviously I didn't get the job...

Two things to consider:

Have you contacted them to ask for feedback on your interview and to understand why you weren't selected?

It may help you if you focus the discussion exclusively on the job during the interview. An appropriate interviewer would never ask you about your children. Any topics other than the job and your qualifications for the job shouldn't come up, unless you raised the issue.

the above poster is right - i found out the hard way that it is actually illegal for someone to ask about your family situation. now i'm not saying that someone at your interview did, but IF someone does, or doesn't hire you b/c of it, that is discrimination. i had two interviews with the same person at the same company and he asked me that question FOUR times. ask yourself this - do you want to work for someone who would hold it against you b/c you have kids???? my guess is no.

Re: Obviously I didn't get the job...

My friend who I mentioned on the other thread is in a very similar situation. She really feels that employers are discriminating against her because she has a year-old son.

There's also "ways" people can ask questions without coming right out and asking if you have kids that can keep you from getting the job. With her, she always says while she will work overtime on occasion, she prefers to have a 9-5 M-F schedule.

A lot of employers don't want to hear that but are not going to come out and tell you. They feel you (not "you" but in general) are not going to be reliable or a hard-worker if you are not at a job's beck and call 24/7.

She shouldn't answer that question. I would flat out say that asking about children is an inappropriate question, but then answer that you forsee no problems with getting to the job, etc

My point was though, that she was never out and out asked if she actually had kids. But there are ?'s potential employers will ask to sense if you have other committments, like children.
