Re: Saw a truly incredible movie tonight...
I saw it! I thought it was incredible too!! It was one of those movies that I couldn't stop thinking about for days.
I rented it never thinking my husband would watch it (we can never agree on movies) and he was totally absorbed into it too.
I want to read the book also (and see the movie again).
Did you see his family when they were on Oprah?

I loved the book more than the movie...but that always happens to me cuz I read the books first.
Question for you all: Do you admire McCandless for what he did or do you think he was crazy?
I personally would love to have done what he did. He saw and did things that most people will never see or do. He truly lived life at it's most basic. I totally admired him for breaking out and doing things the way he wanted.
DH, on the other hand, thinks he was crazy. That he could have kept his $$$ and done the same kind of things in a totally different way.

Can I say both?
I think he had admirable reasons for what he did, but I think he went about things in a slightly crazy way.
I do think at some level he was mentally ill in the way he made his decisions and cut himself off.
But at the same time I walked away from that movie thinking about how much I wish I could be happy with just the basics of life instead of always wanting more.
Maybe I'm crazy though.

I agree with you, I did admire him and wish I could look at life like he did. But I do think he was still a "kid," and made some decisions that I think he shouldn't have made.
[just want to say there may be SPOILERS in what I write below]
He met so many different people on his journey, people he would have never met in his entire life if he hadn't given up all the money he had. And he had such a positive impact on everyone he met. So that's a great thing, and I guess he wouldn't have wanted to change that. If things had gone differently in Alaska, I wonder if he would have kept up those relationships after he returned. He said something in the end that made me think that it wasn't until the last moment that he realized how important connections to other people were.

Re: Saw a truly incredible movie tonight...
Always fascinated by survival themes. Loved this film. Just finished reading the book. I am obsessed, obsessed! Sean Penn did a fantastic job. Loved Eddie Vedder's songs here, especially "Long Nights."
I enjoy the author Jon Krakauer, too (Into Thin Air).

ITA!! .......SPOILERS ..........: McCandless lived life like he wanted and was happy doing that. Admired that he was one of those who let go of conventions about conforming to society and making a living; found happiness is only real when shared!

I was talking to DH about this - he was so young - kids his age do stupid things all the time - at least he set out to find himself in a more meaningful way... but I think because of his age, he had blinders on when it came to what would ultimately be his "enlightenment" - he focused more on the journey, not the destination. The people he encountered and impacted, and impacted him I feel were more related to enlightenment than going to Alaska, but he became so hell bent on going that he became blind to all the other messages around him.
If he were older and had more life experience, he may have recoginzed that...
