New running shoe question

So i started running by accident. I never planned on it, and I never bought running sneakers. I just kept using the ones that I take the gym. They are 4 years old. Chat Icon

So this weekend I decided, i'm a runner. I have been running since October (with a few months off for winter) and I am thinking of running a half marathon. So I went out and bought new sneakers at the Running Store. They are stability and were recommended for my feet. Apparantly. I have a collpased arch.

So this morning I head out on my morning run, and my foot is hurting me. Its a foot I had tendinitis in about 8 years ago.

What I *think* is happening, is that I have been compensating for my crappy shoes and putting most of my weight on the side of my foot. When I put my weight on my full foot, the pain came.

So what do I do? Do I go to a doctor? Do I give it some time to see if my foot adjusts? How long? (I was thinking a week)

My biggest fear is that I woudl injure myself and not be able to run again. That is the one thing I want to prevent.

Re: New running shoe question

break in the shoes slowly. Walk around with them, go for shorter runs in them.

I have low arches and my ankles turn in. I also went to a running store and they fit me with shoes. I had the same problem, ive been compensating for so long that those shoes hurt.

after a couple of weeks breaking in the shoes it feels like heaven to run in them.

You should definitely not be running your normal runs in the new shoes yet. In new shoes I only run a 1/4 of what I normally do for the first week in them. I actually always have a second pair of sneakers Im breaking in...

Also, if your foot is sore, take a anti-inflamatory like Advil and ice your foot for 5-10 minutes when you get home. It's a pain, but it works and I usually put the ice on as Im getting ready for work...it's the best I can do.

Lastly, make sure you are stretching really really well. It makes a big difference in your stride and how you come down on your feet. Seems silly but I have seen a huge difference since I spend 10 minutes before and after my runs stretching.

Thanks guys! I had no idea I had to break in running shoes. It makes sense.

So I will break up my run. I will run less distance more often. Thanks guys!

I have been working for a podiatrist for 16 yrs, try to take it easy with the running with the new shoes, break them in gradually, do a sprinters stretch , you might need orthtoics specifically made for running. HTH Feel better.Chat Icon

Re: New running shoe question

I am healing my feet now.

I signed up for a stroller 5K, bought new sneakers with a raised heal and ran instantly....my heals are in pain.

Now I have to run 3 minutes, walk 3....I can't wait for the pain to go away
