I met someone who's wife used to be a IVF nurse at North Shore. She said they are great there. She also told me that if I go the IVF route that I would end up with mutliples! I guess they have a high incidence of them?

I am not getting nuts here about it, but I thought that was interesting.

Provided I go that route or have enough viable eggs to do that..having twins wouldn't be a bad thing..I'm old and having two at once could be good..

then again..I think I would just be so overwhelmed!

I know a few people who've done IVF:

One of them had 2 singletons, then went back for a 3rd and got twins, and THEN got pg naturally, so now she's gone from her original 3 to 5 Oh, and 3 of them are under 2 - because the last one was a natural pg (it was MF IF).

The other one had twins first, then went back to IVF for her 3rd child, and got a singleton.
I don't think it's a definite that you'll have multiples, but the chance is certainly increased. I'm with you though- i'm 28 and I want twins, just so I don't have to go thru this again!!!!

It's not a defininate if you do IVF you get mulitples. My last IVF cycle, they transferred back 3 8-celled embryos and only one took. IVF of course does increase your chances of mulitples, but so does medicated IUI's as well. I'm with you though, at my age, while it would overwhelming, twins wouldn't be such a bad thing. As it is, if I am blessed enough to get and STAY pregnant this upcoming cycle, and we have a singleton or even twins, there definately wouldn't be much time between the birth of the baby(ies) and trying to get pregnant again due to my age.

That is not always true....My friend just did her 4th IVF cycle and finally got pregnant...this time around they put 6 in, yes 6..(she is 41) she is pregnant with a singleton....her other 3 cycles included a transfer of 3-4 embroys each time and none took until her 4th try...

It all depends on the quality of the embryo, then your age, then other factors and sometimes pure luck...so IVF is not always 100% that you will get multiples but of course it does increase your chances.........

I know it's not a definite thing but isn't it remarkable how they can put 3 or 4 embies in and only one takes?

I guess it's like a fight for space in there! Real estate is still in demand!

I think the twin rate with IVF is around 30%. It depends mainly on how many they put back and how many take. The US has higher multiple rates because our RE's tend to put back more embies than they do in Europe.

Yeah, I was reading how in Europe they are trying to put a law in...I think it was England, maybe...where they can only put back one. Did I see that thread on here? I have no memory anymore.

i just spoke to nsuh doc he says they usually only implant 2 embies

I had eight transfers done last year (I'm 42)...amongst those eight transfers there were over 30 embryo's transferred. Started off with 3 at a time, then 4, then 5, last three transfers were 6 embies....I got PG with a single boy after all of that.

There are a lot of factors with IVF: response to meds, age, quality of eggs, MF.

Most IVF's that end up with twins are younger women. The older you are, the more likely the embryo is imperfect and won't implant.

Yes NSUH has a high incident of twins. We found out last week that we are having twins and then the dr asked if anyone had discusses ESET with me but they hadn't. Fortunately we saw the heartbeats today.

ESET is elective single embryo transfer. I should also mention that I am 37. Also I am not the only twin pregnancy on a NSUH board I am on so I would definitely say they have a high rate of twins.

ESET will soon become the norm for IVF in an attempt to reduce the number of multiples. Since I responded so well to my ivf protocol I had 15 embies that made it to blast. The embies had assisted hatching done on the 2 best for transfer. My understanding is that when you have good quality embies the success rate increases so since it was my first ivf cycle we probably should have tried a single transfer. However since my re was on vacation during my cycle I ended up cycling with the most conservative drs of the group. If a single transfer had failed then they would increase the number transferred. Since we did not know that was an option we transferred 2 hatched blasts. I hope that helps, sorry I couldn't be more informative.
