Re: A great COOKBOOK????

I never use cookbooks because I dont really follow recipes and have the internet wired to my brain... BUT, that being said, I got the Joy of Cooking from my in-laws as there is a lot of non-recipe information in there such as how to peel a mango etc.

Re: A great COOKBOOK????

i have the better homes and gardens red and white checkered one thats great for the basics and has a lot of non recipe food info ( best way to cook certain things, measurement equivalents, etc)
but for everyday, i LOVE the 2 rachel ray 30 minute meal ones that i have. they are so practical with easy, quick recipes that really work for everyday meals, not just special occasions.
i also subscribe to her magazine which has some great recipes, too.
LOL i have a love/hate relationship with her... she kind of annoys me, but her recipes are so good and practical Chat Icon

I have this one and it is the best. Basic, best loved recipes for everything. Other useful info about cooking times, types of meat, etc etc.

Love this one, I say it's a must have.

My Bridal edition of Betty Crocker has been wonderful. If it is not a shower/wedding gift there are regular editions, too.

Re: A great COOKBOOK????

Any of the Barefoot Contessa cookbooks (except the Paris one...it's a great book, but not as versatile as the others).

I agree. I love her stuff, it is easy and whenever I make something from the books I always get asked for the recipe.

All the suggestions above are great. The Joy of Cooking is my favorite reference book. I don't use it a lot for recipes, but as far as "how to cook" stuff, you can't beat it. I got if for Christmas a year & a half ago, and it already looks 10 years old. That's how often I reference it.

Re: A great COOKBOOK????

I love the everyday food cookbook by martha (I also get her magazines- the small one)- this cookbook is great- everything is under 30-35 minutes and it is divided into season. Also- a picture of every recipe which i really like.

At least once a week I make something from that book.

I also have a great italian book- on top of spaghetti.

then I have Mark Bittman's Fish- which I use all the time- each chapter is a different fish- how to tell freshness, etc.

I get rachel ray's magazine- I have her 365 no repeats also book but don't love it b/c no pictures.
Like the magazine better

Also get bon appetite- whicH i really like a lot.

Re: A great COOKBOOK????

I love the barefoot Contessa cookbooks but I also have these two and love them. They combine recipes with the authors own little stories about fmaily and entertaining and are really helpful for young couples.

-Not on love alone: A year of delicious dinners for Newlyweds

and

-The Two of Us . . . and Friends: A Young Couple's Guide to Cooking and Entertaining (Easily, Affordably) with Elegance and Style

Both are by Jessie Carriy Saunders

Another idea is to gather recipes you love and maybe ones her friends and family have and create a cookbook for her.

I like Everyday Pasta by Giada. I also like the Joy of Cooking for basics and it has a lot of useful information such as what temps to cook things too, information on different cuts of meats as well as recipes.

I love Giada's books too. Everyday Italian and Everyday pasta are great books to start off with if she's into Italian!
