Pregnancy and teaching

Did anyone ever get pregnant their first year teaching. How is that usually handled?
Thanks so much!

Re: Pregnancy and teaching

i have not, but i know others that have. if you're worried about taking a leave, don't be! They are required to give you at least 12 weeks FMLA and your distirct may work with you for a longer leave if you're not tenured. your tenure date is usually pushed back the amount of time you take off.

Re: Pregnancy and teaching

Thank you for your replies, I will able to teach in Fall of 2010 but that is right around the time we would want to start TTC for baby #2 so I wasn't sure if I should plan on trying to get a teaching job for 2010 or just wait till 2011.

Re: Pregnancy and teaching

i wouldn't hold off trying to have another baby for a job. Teaching jobs are hard to come by. I would try for a job and if you get one your first year and get pregnant, it will all work out.

Planning never works out the way you want it to!

Re: Pregnancy and teaching

I am due during my second year and do not anticipate any problems...I will take between 6-12 weeks (my district dictates when you can return so I may have to be out longer than 12 weeks if they decide)...a first year teacher had a baby this spring and she didn't have any issues at all! Good luck!
