Is this true?

I am currently working as a sub and I am trying to get a full time teaching position. I thought that this would be a good way to get my foot in the door. But I have heard rumors that some districts don't hire their substitutes for full time positions. Is this true? What is the reasoning for not hiring subs? In my opinion, I think it would be beneficial for a district to hire their subs. But that's just me.

I have heard the same. I believe that it is true for some districts and not others. I don't know the thought behind it. What district are you working for?

Keep your eye out. Is there anyone in the school you can talk to about this to see if it is true for your district?

It depends on the district. The one I'm a sub in now is known to hire it's subs. I was told the district I student taught in didn't (by my cooperating teacher at the time). I agree that it would be beneficial to hire subs, since they know the school district and what is expected.

I'm currently subbing in a wealthy school district on the North Shore. I'm almost positive they don't hire their subs. Which I didn't know until I started hearing rumors about some districts not hiring their subs.

Does anyone know which districts hire subs and which ones don't? I honestly don't want to waste my time. I don't want to be a sub forever!

I worked one time as a permanent sub in a wealthy district on the north shore as well. The people in my building kept telling me, you are good it is a shame the district doesnt' hire subs. However, the district did hire subs as leave replacements. I met with an administrator there and he basiscally told me that subbing and leaves are good ways to get your foot in the door, but they only hire people who have had their own classroom and that experience. He basically told me I should forget it and get a job in the city. I was like

oh it is very, very true!

there's one town in nassau that flat out will NOT hire their subs. i knew that and refused to apply there.

my district, however, hires many of their permanent subs. this year, however, none will be getting jobs as we're losing positions

Like the other girls said, it depends on a district. My district has hired some of it's subs but it's rare.

My district only hires full time teachers who have previously taught. It is rare for them to hire a teacher right out of school. They will however, hire subs right out of school. If a sub is phenomenal then they may hire them full time.
We have had many subs leave to go work in the city because they needed to get the experience before they could get a job on the island.
I'm sorry you are having trouble finding a job. It is so hard right now. There are so many candidates out there. I hope you find something soon.

I'm currently working in a wealthy North Shore district. I agree with the PP, my school will only hire full-timers with at least 2 years teaching experience. However, they will hire subs right out of school. There have been times that subs have become leave replacements, which then can lead to a permanent position if they like you.
It can happen, I think it's kind of a "right place, right time" thing.

Ive heard that. but DH is a tenured 5 year NYC teacher and cant get a job either, i think its half skill half luck!

Depends on the district! I've heard that Pat-Med hires their subs and student teachers!

Not a teacher but I know for a fact that my district, Massapequa, hires its subs. Yes, she subbed for 4 years, but she is now a teacher.

It is so frustrating because I taught at a private school in NYC for 4 years before moving to LI. So it's not like I'm straight out of college.

It all depends on the district. Some like to hire within and some don't.
