Re: Buying a home in North Baldwin?
I have mixed feeligns on this issue.
I grew up in Baldwin and my family is still there.
but I have to say, Baldwin has changed a LOT in the past few years.
Ethnically, it has changed, and that's not a bad thing necessarily. But many people think it is and many long time Baldwinites have been leaving in droves.
I went through the schools and really got a GREAT education. The elementary schools and middle schools are still good, but the HS has changed. there have been gang fights, etc. etc. HOWEVER, a friend of mine enroled her there lst year and she is doing great.
PLease feel free to FM about this.... I am torn on this for some reasons.

Re: Buying a home in North Baldwin?
We had an apartment in North Baldwin - right off Grand Ave by the Dairy Barn. We lived there for three years and moved out last summer. The area is really changing. I loved our street, but didn't feel safe walking around there at night.
Grand Ave also became dangerous to drive down - I found that people were treating it like a drag-racing strip.

It is a very pretty area and I think well maintained, but I would worry about property values and the schools. I hate that it's an issue, but you have to think about resale value.

I teach at Baldwin High School and while there have been fights-- they are not gang related-- they are usually involving a small group of students. I teach an advanced placement class and there are a lot of good kids there.

I completely agree! I actually live in South Baldwin and am currently selling my house to move out of the area. I grew up here as well and feel the same way about the schools... it was really changing when I graduated from there and that was 10 years ago.

Re: Buying a home in North Baldwin?
my parents live in north baldwin and i grew up there as well. i loved living in baldwin, but i am very sad to see it today. there is a part of grand ave where i used to get bagels from and pizza when i was in elementary school, by the mcdonalds. i dont even recognize it anymore. and the crime, dont get me started! and there is no shopping in baldwin. but that has always been a problem lol.

Re: Buying a home in North Baldwin?
I used to go there all the time when I was young to Nunley's. I actually just moved out of Baldwin on the boarder of Baldwin Harbor. While I liked the area off Altantic Ave I did not feel comfortable going North. Also I used to sub in the district and it was amazing subbing at Meadow down south one day and going to the North the next..definitly divided. Best of luck with the house search

Re: Buying a home in North Baldwin?
I'm glad I joined up here so I could help dispel some of the myths about Baldwin. It's beyond me how a town that was described as one of top 25 best places to live in Money magazine last year continues to elicit such derision from Long Island residents. My wife and I moved here five years ago and were attracted by a solid school district, affordable and attractive homes and what is almost impossible to find on Long Island--racial diversity. It's unfortunate that as demographics in a town change to include more minorities the anecdotal tales about it being a "bad area" come out of the woodwork. I'm glad the teacher in the high school posted to quell the fears about "gang fights." If the original poster is still considering North Baldwin or anywhere else in the area I can give the town a definite recommendation. Don't worry, I walk around all the time at night, nothing seems to happen to me.
