Substitute teaching or Teacher Assistant
How much does a substitute teacher make? And how does one become one? Do I need to be certified?
What about Teachers assistant?
Background on me- I have a BS degree in El Ed, but wasn't ready to be a teacher 12 years ago when I graduated - now that I have a baby and have matured, I'd like to re-explore...

you don't need to be certified as per NY state law, but most LI districts have certified subs because there is such an over-saturation of teachers in a tight market.
the pay for a sub varies by district. Low end would probably be around $90 a day and upper end around $130 a day. Subs receive no benefits.
Teaching assistants, also don't need to be certified as per NY state law, but most LI districts have certified teaching assistants because there is such an over-saturation of teachers in a tight market.
TAs ususally make mid-twenties in salary and most districts do give TAs the option for benefits.
you don't need to be certified to sub in NYC. i don't know what their rate is for subs.
If you're certified, i would apply for teaching jobs, why not? but with a baby, it might be great to go in when you want and make your own schedule which you could do as a sub. you could sub for multiple districts or maybe land a permanent sub with one district. the TA gig might be nice for you because you can actually leave at 3:00 as you would have no lesson planning responsbiitlies, no report cards, calling parents, etc. etc.
I think it all depends on what your family needs financially and benefits wise and how much time you're willing to give up away from your baby.

I am not actually certified - I have the degree and student taught, passed the qualification test, but never got a job as a teacher, which was a requirement to become certified. I think I will call the NYS ed dept to see what my options are.

You will need to teach to become permanently certified. when you graduated, you probably received your provisional certificate, which expires after 5 years if you have not taught.
requirements for certification changed in 2003, so i would contact the state and see what you need to do. you have to teach for 2 years (subbing would count for this, not sure about teaching assistant) to have your certificate become permanent.
now the certificates are initial and professional, basically the same as provisional and permanent, but to take professioanl certficate there are some extra requirements like hours, but most people get those by just doing their regular teaching job (things like professional development, faculty meetings and the like count towards the hours.

Substitutes that are not certified as a teacher can work only 40 days per year as a sub. I knew a sub at Locust Valley and she was not certified.

"Substitutes without a valid certificate and who are not working toward certification - Service may be rendered in New York State public schools for no more than 40 days per school year. "

when I was a sub teacher in NY I was making $100 a day!
I had my teaching degree and certification

I think in the city subs make $130/day. You do not need to be certified.
I know that most districts require there TAs to be certified, either as teachers or hold TA certification (If you have taken and passed the LAST you do not need to take the TA test). Some districts are still getting around all of this by having "paraprofessionals" who do not need to be certified.

this is true, but if you are working towards certification (which techinically you are - slowly) there is no day limit
Persons without certification but who are preparing to be certified may substitute for any length of time in any area
