Any teachers who are coaches?

What should I do? I am a coach and I am very fair. When it came time to choose captains for next year, I chose those who were reliable, good at the sport, respectful, dedicated and those who interacted with the team well. After choosing who is best suited for the team, one student begins hysterical crying and now her mom keeps emailing me about how her student deserves to be captain. I think the mom doesn't realize her student missed many practices and 2 games due to other activities and routine dr. apts that are to be scheduled at other times. She is now getting administration involved and saying I do not like her daughter. What would you do?

I say stand your ground. You know best. I just hope there was some way for you to have documented her absences. Do you take attendance at practices and games? If so, that gives the mom very little argument. I hope your administrators will support you.

Do you have proof of attendance or anything like that to back you up should anyone inquire?

Absolutely stand your ground! we as teachers and coaches lose all authority when we back down to annoying parent. it sends the message that parents will get what they want anyway.

if you have documeneted attendance, that would be great, but i think you already have a godo argument for your decision.

I fully agree...its becoming a time when if parents question teachers/administrators' positions, they're finding them to back down & this shouldn't happen. Her daughter will get over it...every child cannot be captain. You chose who you saw best fit. Can you make it known to the team why/how you chose a captain ("I chose a person who demonstrates good leadership skills; someone who never missed a practice; someone the girls look up to, etc.)

Stand firm...let them go to administration

Re: Any teachers who are coaches?

Thank you so much for your advice. I did keep attend. records and have documentation that she was at another extra activity on many occasions. I am confident in my decision and I am pretty sure my AP who is also the in charge of athletics has my back.

I also recieved negative feedback from the other team members regarding this particular girl saying they make them feel bad and she is mean to them. And, she went around telling people that last years captains S*cked and she could do a much better job.

I am just not sure how to word all this to the parent without making her feel bad.

Oh, it's perfect that you took attendance records. If you speak to the parent, just let her know that the main requirement for captaincy is a good attendance record. I'd leave the character issue out of it unless the mother goes to the admin., in which case, tell them and let them handle it.

Re: Any teachers who are coaches?

I agree with everyone else - stand your ground. Openly communicate this all to your supervisors in charge. Show them the emails this woman has sent. Ask them what they would do. I know that in my school when a parent steps over the line my Athletic Director takes over and if the parent keeps going my Principal gets involved. It sounds like you could use their support and don't be afraid to ask for it. As for the parent, don't give her too much of an explanation. Be brief and honest and don't entertain her complaints. I've been in many situations like this and I find that the more I listen and understand the more the parent thinks s/he can keep backing you into a wall and get his/her way.

Question for next year - do you have to assign captains so early? Why not wait until the actual season begins? You can have your decision pre-made, but it seems it would keep you out of trouble.

Good luck!
