HS Spec Ed Teachers-Question
I will be teaching 1 period of resource room next year (rest of the day inclusion). How does RR work at hs level, as I've only done it at elementary? What I mean is do the kids who come to resource room usually in the same grade and taking the same subjects? I'm a little anxious about this. I don't know how I would run it if everyone is taking different courses. Also, do you have a set curriculum for teaching study skills? I appreciate any info/help!! THanks

Re: HS Spec Ed Teachers-Question
Each school is different so I am only talking about my school! They try to keep the kids in the same relative grade, but that doesn't always happen. I just kept on top of the teachers and made sure i knew of any upcoming tests/projects/missing assignments. If I didn't understand something (i.e. math LOL) I would send the students to the specific teacher. Usually if you work it out with the students and look in the text books you can figure it out.

Re: HS Spec Ed Teachers-Question
Ours runs pretty much the same way Liz said. We don't have kids in the same grade level. This year I had one senior, two junior,s one sophomore and one freshman in my resource room. Usually I talk to the kids about what they are doing in each class, if they have any tests/projects/etc... coming up. I also talk to the teachers regularly to see if there is anything I need to be aware of. We work on a lot of study skills, organization, time management, and reading and writing skills. I would say get to know the kids a bit in the beginning of the year and you will quickly learn who needs what. Sometimes they just need someone to talk to.
I do not have a set curriculum. I have skill books that I use depending on what the students need. I basically start off every period with a couple minutes of chatting with each student. Sometimes they need help with things they learned in math class, sometimes they need time to organize their papers, it depends on the day.
Also, my advice is don't worry/stress too much. Resource is my favorite period of the day because it is more relaxed and I get to be more of myself and I really get to know my kids. HTH and let me know if you have any more questions!
