Puerta del Sol-really nice to walk around

Almudena Cathedral-beautiful

The Prado-awesome museum

Retiro Park-beautiful park, nice to walk around and just chill


I stayed here Muralto
It wasn't the fanciest, but it was very clean and nice and centrally located (right near El Corte Ingles, a huge department store)

LOVED Madrdi!!

I was just there in April!

Stayed at the Westin Palace but was a little disappointed. It's a $300+ a night room and really didn't feel like it (I used Starwood Points). Gorgeous bathrooms though!

Best part of Madrid was tapas/barpping hopping. The food is SO GOOD.

Never went to any museums or cathedrals or anything like that. Really we just sat around, ate, drank, and walked around and people watched. A gorgeous, relaxing city!

Worst part of Madrid is the airport. Way tooo big and disorganized.

As someone else mentioned: Go to Toledo! It's only about an hour away from Madrid by train, and is one of the most gorgeous places on earth. Buy your tix a day in advance, though; we went to buy them that morning and there were no seats left, so we had to go the next day. You'll only need about 4 or 5 hours there, so you'll be back in Madrid for dinner.

You should go to the Prado, obviously, but don't forget about the Reina Sofia Museum as well - that's where Picasso's masterpiece Guernica is, among other more modern works of art. It's much smaller and more "doable" than the Prado in an afternoon.

It's worth hitting the Royal Palace, you get an interesting guided tour and it overlooks the nearby countryside for some really pretty views.

Try to catch a dance production - they put them on all the time for tourists, and it's not cheesy and is a fun night out. We saw one in a theater right by the palace; bought tickets about 3 hours before the show, went for dinner, and then headed back. It was a great night out.

DH's family is there, so we usually stay with them, but we stayed at the Weston for a few days on our honeymoon and loved it!

I agree with everyone: Plaza Mayor, Prado and Thyssen-Bornemisza Museums, Royal Palace, Botanical Gardens and the side trip to Toledo.

ETA: If you can get to a bull festival - it's actually quite exciting and those Spaniards are very proud of bull fighting and all that goes with it.
