I guess I have a different opinion on this.
I obviously dont LOVE the idea of ever paying more in taxes but I also have my child in one of the best school districts on Long Island and Id like to keep it that way.
If paying a little more money ( I beleive my budget was about 10%) keeps my district one of the best then we are willing to pay for that.
If I didnt want my child to have better programs, more after school activities, free extra help whenever needed etcc.. I guess I could really just send him anywhere.
I want my sons teachers to be happy, they go out of their way all the time to make his school year so wonderful.
ANd its not just for the teachers, its for so many other things..updated computers, new and better books, maintence.. things I cant even think of off the top of my head.
I will always vote yes ( within reason) and hope that the money is really used for what its intended on.
And to the wonderful teachers, I think it is terrible that so many of you arent paid what you are worth. I hope one day that can change.
Personally I feel teachers should be making a doctors salary!

although i agree with what you are saying...i would LOVE to be able to support the betterment of my future son/daughters education...But if i am unable to live here then what good will that do me or my child? Nothing

It's sad- but what about the people in Wyndanch or Roosevelt- they don't have very good school systems, and they can't afford to live in Sachem SD or Massapequa SD or any other "good" SD....

The fact that SDs have to rely on town taxes as a method of funding really creates this disparity we have b/w the haves and the have-nots.

While I understand what Red is saying... I feel for the teachers too....

I really think it's a function of the state AND the Fed giving more $$$ to what's important- our kids.

Re: Budget Votes

I agree that ALL children should be able to benefit from getting a good education and the districts that are suffering the worst should get much more funding without raising taxes but the truth is, the more money you have.. the better area you can afford to live in, the better school districts you can send your child too..
I mean, thats really the bottom line.
Newsweek runs the top 500 schools in the United States and the very many that are on LOng Island are all in the wealthier areas..
Theres nothing wrong with NOT going to the best. Again.. its whatever your income can afford.

Re: Budget Votes

It's a shame that there is not a system like the one in the city where there are public, specialized high schools open to more than whoever lives in the district. But then again, LI does not have reliable public transportation.Chat Icon

Re: Budget Votes

I would HATE that. I would def not want my school district open for all to attend. I guess that would be great news for some families but not so great for others.

Re: Budget Votes

It doesn't work exactly like that - in the city you can go to your generic school, like your "Smithtown High", or you can go to a special school, and then there are a few schools that have BOTH in them - the generic, and the "special". And the special attracts really motivated, bright kids.
