Anyone have any info re: twins?

I'm just curious because I have heard that it tends to skip a generation but this past weekend I ran into an old friend from HS who is a twin and she told me she is the proud mother of a set of 10 month old twins!! I didn't think this was possible!

I'm just curious if it's possible for me to have twins. My mom had a set of twins, and DH's mother had a set as well. My cousin had twins too. Do you ladies think I have good chances of having them too!?!??! Chat Icon
(no, I'm not pregnant right now Chat Icon ).. just thought that maybe you all would have some insight!

Re: Anyone have any info re: twins?

I *think faternal twins are the ones that are genetic (but can be a freak thing 2) because medically....your releasing 2 eggs...

Identical twins are the wow DH has 2 real fast swimmers and got there the same time....

I could be wrong though...

Anyone could have twins...it running in the family would prob increase your chances.....

Fraternal twins skip a generation, identical twins are a genetic abnormality (scienficially speaking, not commenting on the nature of identical twins) and can occur any time.

My best friend is an identical twin, and her sister had a set of fraternal twin boys. She told me this is the only way a twin can have twins.

both of my SILs have sets of twins (fraternal). DH's grandfather was a twin, so we think that played a role in it

Our neighbors have fraternal twins and twins don't run in either family that they know of.

Just be mindful that many of the twins you encouter today are products of IVF technology. Many parents may not want to say anything. There is one grade in my school district (where I teach, small district) that has 5 sets of twins. Chances are at least two or three are a product of IVF.

Re: Anyone have any info re: twins?

The question I have is your mother an identical or fraternal twin? If she's fraternal, then yes you have a higher chance than a singelton.

Rather than type it all, I've copied & pasted the info. This is a compliation of different websites I've looked at:

There is no proof for or against twinning skipping generations. There is however a genetic predisposition for fraternal twining, meaning the ability to produce more than one ovum during a menstrual cycle in genetically inherited.

As everyone mentioned, there are 2 types of twins.

Identical - In the early stages post-conception, the cells divide and divide. In the case of ID twins, during one of these divisions, the ball of cells breaks completely apart and forms two balls of cells and, in turn, two individuals.

Within identical twins, depending on when the division occurred there are different subsets. Some are mirror image twins (division post conception day 9-12) who look as if they are looking in a mirror, ie a mole or dimple on opposite sites, etc., conjoined twins (division after day 12) which are rare.

Fraternal - two eggs, two sperm - these twins are no more alike then other siblings. Some women who ovulate more than once a month are far more likely to have more than one set of fraternals.

Another factor for an increase in fraternal twins is the older you are when you get pregnant, the more likely you are to have twins due to hormonal changes and the release of multiple eggs.

Re: Anyone have any info re: twins?

Actually I think identical is when there is 1 swimmer and the cells split very early on (days). The genetics are identical.

Lots of fraternal twins are from modern technology. Lots are from moms with multiple eggs spit out with different swimmers finding each one so they are as identical as any sibling.

I don't think they really skip generations - it is probably just chance that they seem that way. I don't know any genetic condition off hand that consistently skips a generation...

Identical is the freak thing...coincidence...???
