Question For Fellow Elementary Teachers Regarding Maternity

I have been teaching 8 years in the city. I am 28 weeks pregnant and due in October. I am planning on going in for a few weeks in September and then taking a leave for 12 weeks (FMLA).

Here is my question: opinions needed alsoChat Icon

Since there will be a sub or someone of the sought covering my Pre-K class (its public school) am I expected since I am leaving and not being paid (and she is) to have to leave plans for 3 MONTHS? I would think not but wanted your opinions.

Thanks a bunch,
Keri

I would assume no....I would think that the teacher coming in would want to do her own thing. Also, I was a leave replacement and no plans were left for me, and I just took 10 months off (maternity leave) and never even thought to leave plans.

i would assume no. she is a leave replacement, not a per diem sub.

Absolutely not. However, you will definitely want this person to follow your *routines* and general curriculum so that your transition back into the classroom will be smooth and easy.

Thank to all whose responded thus far. I didn't think so either, but of course I want her to know my routines since I am leaving my little pre-k's after two weeks and they will barely remember me when I return in JanuaryChat Icon

I left mine a copy of my plan book from the year before and some file and notes of topics that needed to be covered. That seemed to be good enough.

I'm in the same situation (28 weeks pg too!) and I have zero plans of leaving plans for 3 months. I've asked my colleagues to help whomever ends up with my class. My grade does have a curriculum map that I will leave.

Re: Question For Fellow Elementary Teachers Regarding Maternity

in florida, i was required to leave plans and it helped my sub transition very well. it wasn't that bad, but it took me about 2 weekends to do it all. she followed most of my routines, though i had to retrain my kids a bit when i got back. good luck on ur preg and with the new class. they're going to love your belly and baby!

i think that is what made my last class so great, they were so involved in my pregnancy...they loved the belly-especially when we had to put our bellies in during the hokey pokeyChat Icon and they always asked about my son

kindergarteners even wrote letters to my son when i'd miss school for his doctor appts...it was great!

Re: Question For Fellow Elementary Teachers Regarding Maternity

you don't need to leave plans unless you want to.

i will be out on maternity and i planned out my lessons for 2 months and made all the photocopies for her. she's on her own after that. i wanted her to see how i do it because i want it to be the same for when i come back. plus i know and like her and wanted to make her life easier!

see, I'm EXPECTED to leave 3 months worth of plans. You may want to check with your administrator.

What exactly are you expected to leave? When I think "plans", I'm thinking day-by-day notes telling what to do and when to do it. There's no way that's even POSSIBLE for 3 months. If you mean, "Cover chapters 2-4 in math" then that I understand ...

Re: Question For Fellow Elementary Teachers Regarding Maternity

I teach at a K-8 school in CT but when I asked, this is the same for every grade ... we do not have to leave plans for the leave replacement...

with that said, I will leave guidlines so he/she knows what to cover- but I will not leave daily plans...
I am considering leave the first unit spelled out for him/her, but after that, no way!
