Johnny was discharged from EI this morning (with an update)
My little guy was officially discharged from EI. It's been a long 7 months filled with speech and OT. He starts his big boy preschool program next week and I am anxious but excited for him..I hope he ends up liking it!!!
I wanted to share my experience with EI. So you can read for yourself how far my man has come.....
When we began EI, Johnny was 16 months old. Here were his levels:
Gross Motor:16 months
Fine motor: 12 months (4 month delay)
Self Help/Social Skills: 12months trickling up to 16 months
Receptive Skills: 7-12 months in some areas (this horrified me at the time but made sense. He wasn't really doing anything we asked and we weren't sure if he could understand).
Expressive speech: 9-12 months
Cognitive: 9-12 months.
Now, less than 7 months later at 23 months old....
Gross Motor: 24 month level
Fine motor: 21 month level
Self Help/Social: 20-24 months
Receptive Skills: 20-24 months!!!!!!!!
Expressive Speech:16-24 months. He can communicate what he wants/needs but still has few words BUT gesturing/imitation and things like knowing his animal sounds etc put him in certain on target areas.
Cognitive: 18-24 months.
I cried through the whole report. Everytime they stated his progress, I cried....they said they have not had a child come through EI with results like this in a long, long time. Every child makes improvements but they said Johnny is like another kid. What is funny is that I never really thought he was THAT bad or behind...I just thought of him as my super active little boy who didn't sit down.
I realize how much it helped but I also attribute so much to maturity. As he gets older, he just is "getting" so much more. He amazes us everyday. He played with a little girl at the park just now for 45 minutes. Hide and seek, going down the slide with her etc...this is a child who didn't really acknowledge anyones existence but his own and his parents.
SO....for those of you doing EI and feeling apprehensive....just know that you are doing the best thing for your kid. We still have work to do, and I want to hear more words from this kid but I have to say, it was exactly what I and DH needed. We are very proud of how hard he has worked.

I am so thrilled to read this. YOU should be so proud of yourself because it is YOU and the hard work you went through with his team that got him to where he is today.
I got chill bumps reading your post. Thank you so much for sharing this. It will not only provide comfort to moms just starting the journey through EI, but gives professionals like myself in the field of EI the story of success we LIVE for!!!!

I am SO SO happy for you guys!! He is such a beautiful little boy...I can't get over his handsome smile. He seems so proud of himself too.

That is fantastic news! I can relate to so much of what you're saying in this post... I have been thru it and my DS is another therapy success story. You should congratulate yourself because the therapy itself makes a big difference, but an involved and dedicated parent can truly work wonders in conjunction.

Honestly, I give you guys SO MUCH CREDIT. I loved my OT...she was amazing. She cried today too..it was very bittersweet. I am so sad to be done with her, but she said she will be by to say hello and to see all his new progress. She truly truly loved Johnny...it showed every single session and man, did he adore her. He would run up to her and hug her all the time. When she would leave, he would cry at the door and wave bye bye from the window...
I think people in those positions are angels. They have tough jobs but so incredibly rewarding..you should feel very proud of your work!!!

Wow! What an impressive amount of progress your little guy has made! You have every reason to be proud---just reading your post makes me feel proud of him. He must be incredibly smart...not to mention soooo adorable!!!
Kudos to mom and dad for getting the EI for Johnny. I would say the 3 of you are a VERY strong family team!!!!

Im new so I hope you dont mind me posting!!!
That is TERRIFIC!!!!
We tried out for EI with our daughter a few months back but she fell into the 12-18month category since she isnt 2 yet....
But I was really hoping to get her some speech therapy since she doesnt speak....
So I can only imagine how wonderful this must be for you!
