Wow, I had NO idea schools were so strcit about this! When I was in school we were taken out every year as my parents refused to travel during the peak times. I wouldn't trade those memories for antyhing and I was ALWAYS able to get all my work before we left and have it done by the time we got back.

Same here. I think it's horrible to punish students for their parents decisions.

I understand that it's done to discourage the parents from booking school year vacations- but it's ridiculous!

it's not about punishment. there are rules in place. an illegal absence is an illegal absence. it's the same as a child cutting school---you can't give them the opportunity to make up work if they cut, that's not fair to the kids who are there.

i will not get work together before a child goes away on vacation--my school doesn't allow it. and rightfully so--do you realize how long it takes to get stuff together? especially if my plans aren't even written yet? i make a folder of what was missed and they make it up when they get back. their parents are responsible for teaching them the lessons. i do my best if there's a little extra time to go over it with them, but that's not fair to the children who were there and there's rarely extra time. if there was a test, they take it the day they get back.

and it's not necessarily easier for younger grades. when students miss math concepts or social studies lessons, there is no textbook where i can tell the parents to read and go over it with them. so much of elementary school is child centered---meaning the children are creating and exploring--not reading from a textbook like in the upper grades. so if they miss that experience, there's no way to make it up.

But memories with family are a ton more important.

I agree.

I believe wholheartedly that family memories are important. As a teacher, however, I think it's a mixed message to take kids out for extended periods of time (more than one or two days). How are students supposed to view school as a worthwhile activity if their parents are so quick to blow it off? Education is an investment in a child's future. While it may seem harmless to skip a week here, a week there, what message is the child taking away from that about the value of education?

We have the same policy about the illegal absences, although I dont know anyone that follow it.

What I HATE HATE HATE is when parents call me up and demand an entire week or more worth of work and expect it in time so their kid can do it prior to the vacation. I usually give what I have planned to the student in a general manner (IE we will be up to chapter XX and here is the essay assignment thats due XX, there will be a test on XX when you get back), but I am absolutely not going to take time out of MY day to go copy every overhead note, worksheet and story so they can sit on the beach!!!!!

I have been a teacher for 11 years and I am all for taking my kids out of school for vacation. On a teachers salary I could never afford a vacation otherwise. I am lucky enough now to only be parttime so I can plan my trips anytime.
