I could really use some help

I'm so upset and I feel like my career as a guidance counselor is basically over. I am embarrassed to even put this out there, but I'm so desperate for help here. I had a job in a good district last year and they totally scrwed me over. There have been almost no jobs this summer and I still don't have anything. I've sent my resume to a bunch of BOE schools and nothing. This is so frustrating. DH got laid off back in April and then my job didn't work out. We have no idea what to do at this point.

PLEASE....if anyone knows anyone that could help me get a job as a guidance counselor....BOE, Private, whatever, I would absolutely appreciate any help. TIAChat Icon

Chat Icon I don't know of anything myself. As a matter of fact, I am still searching for a job too. I read your post and I know how you feel. It is hard not to get overwhelmed and depressed. I just wanted to let you know that I will be thinking of you and sending all the job dust I can muster! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Also, I don't know if you're interested in working at the college level, but I worked in student affairs and most, if not all, of the career counselors on campus also had certification to be a guidance counselor. it is another outlet you could look into if you can't find anything on the high school level. as far as I know, you don't need a certification to work at the college level, just a counseling degree.

GOOD LUCK! unfortunately, i don't know of any positions.

Re: I could really use some help

I completely know how you are feeling Chat Icon I graduated a couple years ago with my guidance counselor degree and I have yet to find anything. Most of my graduating class is in another area of counseling...very few are in schools. What is also sick is that even people who i know with experience in a school cant find jobs! Its insanity! I hear that long island is almost impossible but keep sending out resumes to the city.

I have decided to go the route of teaching to get the experience first in a classroom by joining the NYC Teaching Fellows.

Best of Luck!

What are you certified, and what is your degree in?

i think you may be qualified to work as a service coordinator for Early Intervention

I don't know if my friend has her leave replacement set up yet, but I know a guidance counselor who will be out in Queens come December. I know it's not an immediate solution, but FM me if you want the school's info! I hope something comes for you sooner!

I have answered these ads as well. I think because you don't need to be certified, I get passed over because I am certified and I have experience. Thanks for tryingChat Icon

I also have experience. I'm so confused and frustrated as to WHY this is so hard. I hadn't thought about a teaching fellow.....what subject are you doing?? Thanks for your inputChat Icon

I have my Masters and Professional Diploma in Counseling, I am City, State, and Nationally Certified. I also hold a NYS License as a LMHC (mental health counselor). I thought they only used social workers for EI?? This may be a good avenue if this school year turns out to be a bust. I hadn't even thought of that. Do you have any additional info about how to go about this??? Thank youChat Icon
