FYI: Islanders radio heads to FM dial
Thursday, September 11, 2008 03:16 PM EDT By David Reich-Hale
The New York Islanders on Thursday said it has created a radio partnership with Long Island Radio Group, including putting all night games on WMJC- 94.3FM of Smithtown.
All day games will be broadcast on WHLI- 1100AM.
The deal also includes a promotional partnership between the Islanders and Long Island Radio Group stations, which also include KJOY - 98.3 FM, B-103, WRCN - 103.9 FM and LOVE 96.1 FM. All station encompass what the Islanders are calling the Islanders Radio Network.
The decision to put night games on WMJC comes at a cost: Fans in the rest of the metropolitan area, including Queens and Brooklyn will struggle to pull in the signal and fans in New Jersey and most of Connecticut won't be able to listen on the radio at all.
The Islanders also become the first major sports team in New York without a presence on the New York City radio dial.
The Islanders Radio Network is set up so fans outside of Long Island can listen on XM Radio or online," said Corey Witt, an Islanders spokesman. "With that said, we are always exploring more ways to broaden our reach."
Steve Mears and Chris King will continue as the radio voices of the Islanders.
