I don't know what to do
Current Job: Permanent Sub in a nice district, usually in one school everyday unless they call me to go somewhere else, absolutely LOVE it, 2 women going on maternity leave at the end of March-permanent subs get leave replacements but I'm one of four in the building.
Got a call today for: Leave replacement, private school, October-March, 6th grade, two subjects I didn't do so well in when I was in school, plus religion and Language Arts (I have an English degree, so at least I'm comfortable with that). I student taught in 6th grade, so I'm comfortable with it.
I just don't know what to do. I love my current placement, but I don't see any openings happening for my own classroom anytime soon. I told my husband today that I shouldn't wait around for things to happen, I need to MAKE them happen. But then again, I love the district I'm in, but for one of the subs, this is her third year as a permanent sub there.
WWYD? Any advice? And then what do I do once it's over?

Personally I would stay in the public school. You sould like you have a good chance of getting a leave replacement there. Also as a sub you can register with NYSUT and the NYSTRS and this way this time will count for you. At a private school the time won't count.

I'm actually registered with NYTRS already, and I didn't consider a private school not contributing. That's a good point.
I wouldn't mind if it was my own classroom for a regular school year, just to get some experience, but I'm torn on the leave replacement, especially since I'm happy where I am. Thanks for your advice ladies!

You see I went through the same thing. I was in the same school for a few years covering a leave and working a PT position.
They could never place me. I was sick of the day-to-day where will I work etc.
I was also sick of waiting aroud for the district/school to finally hire me.
So I got fed up and went to the first opening that came up in a private school.
Yes, the money is very different. The kids are great though and I get paid for time off , benefits too unlike before.
Also, if you go back to public school I believe you can apply for steps (for time worked).
It's tough---is this job permanent? If it's only to cover a maternity leave it may not be worth it. Stay where you are.

If the leave was for the entire school year, I'd say go for it. But since it's only till March, I suggest staying where you are (and keep applying elsewhere).

That is good that you are already regisltered with NYSTRS. I only say that because I work with a woman who is of age to retire but she taught in a private school for 10 years and therefore does not have enough time in the public schools just yet to retire.

i would ABSOLUTELY stay in the public school. you are a permanent sub and work everyday and it looks like you have a very good chance fo getting a leave replacement coming up and they may have a permanent position for you next year. you also are building time in TRS, which is important.
the private school will probably pay you less than you are making now. and i know you're probably dying for your own class, there will be private school jobs available again next year (they often have high turn over becase of the low pay).
i would sit this one out... it may pay off. if not, there will be other opportunities for jobs next year in public and private schools.

I think it dependson the school districts history about hiring their Perm Sub or Leave replacements. If it is the district I work in I woud tell you to go to the Private school. My school district is notorious for NOT hiring heir leaves/perm subs

From what I've been hearing, my district is one of the only ones that does hire their perm. subs for classroom jobs. A lot of the current teachers in the district started out as subs for the district. So their history is pretty good.
Thank you everyone for your advice. I'm going to call tomorrow and decline the interview. I just hope it doesn't ruin my chances for possible openings next year (the school is in the Diocese).

I would still go in for the interview!! If they decide to hire you then you have a decision to make BUT def go for the interview! The more practice you have interviewing, the better!!
