Do you get physically ill watching tight games; do you get very emotional when your team is eliminated; are you able to put it all in perspective and move on either way? Are you able to joke around about your team's failures?

This is why I ask...

My DH and I are both die-hard fans--him of the Yankees; me of the Mets. We went through virtual hell the year we started dating--2000!
Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon I would say we both get knots in our stomachs watching games, but he is almost out of control with his emotions (hah, this from a woman Chat Icon).

We haven't fought in ages over baseball and we even called a truce upon the birth of our first DD 3 years ago. Well, last night I was at the Mets game and just as they won, the Yankees were eliminated. I took a picture of the scoreboard and texted DH, "Peter...so sorry" but did not send the picture too.

I got home and he went BALLISTIC! He said I was totally insensitive and mean and how could I do this to someone I love blah, blah, blah. I thought it was a good-natured joke...guess not. He ended up not coming to bed for hours! (But, we did make up today) Maybe I should just hit "delete" on that picture now Chat Icon...

Re: If you're a die-hard fan, how seriously do you take it...

I hate to admit this - but I am just like your DH

It's not an issue for us, because we are both Met fans

And it's silly because at the end of the day, we're not getting paid to watch these guys - they're getting millions whether they win or lose

But with the Mets and the Jets, I do take these game more seriously than I should.

And with my Yankee fan friends, we have a policy never to discuss the teams, because no good ever comes of it.

My family (all Yankee fans) love to rib me, and I have to bite my tounge alot, or else there'd be huge brawls at family parties and stuff Chat Icon

So, it's irrational and silly, but I totally get where your DH is coming from.

And a mini-update on the situation...

Here's the email I just received from my lovely DH (as you can see, I had to edit out some things Chat Icon)...

Meet the Mets...head to the park and tell the Mets and their a-hole fans to go f$%# themselves.

Popcorn green grass all out at Shea...

I will accept your apology after [insert perversions of your own imagination...edited by me Chat Icon].

I love you

Peter

Dave gets SO into the games that he has been banned from watching the Yankees in the house (and i'm not kidding) - he is NOT permitted to watch them when i'm there.

Football is actually worse....he FREAKS out anytime something goes wrong, yells at the television - RUINS my good time (i love football so much)...we've fought about it - i've spoken to the doctor about it....i've even gone so far as to drug his beer (he knew it) to calm him down (we were watching a game at home with our friends and their children and he was LOSING his mind and the kids were getting nervous - so i dropped a xanax in his beer)!

I always have to say to him - how does the Steelers losing affect your life? It DOES NOT - how does you acting like a psychopath affect your life? VERY poorly - because we fight....yet it never seems to work.

now with the twins, i have to watch myself when watching the games - especially my language.

I've already made them jump a few times when I yell out - because it comes out of nowhere.

Right now, they giggle when daddy shouts and waves his arms around. They think he's playing a game Chat Icon

We are a mixed marriage too. Me Yankees and my wife is Mets.

We have a bunch of ground rules for watching when they are both on. The team that's batting gets the main screen and the other team gets the small picture-in=picture...it's a whole thing. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Anyway, we are passionate about our teams but not to the point of crying when they lose. We'll get upset and yell at the managers, etc...

Re: If you're a die-hard fan, how seriously do you take it...

oh Erin....you poor thingChat Icon Man, he over-reacted with that one. Did he ever think we had a shot to get into the playoffs? Last night was not sad at all for me...I guess I had my closure with the final games at the stadium this weekend and I liked it that way. Besides, if we made it to the playoffs, we'd get eliminated in the first round anyway. And as far as I can see it, we don't deserve to be in the playoffs! Chat Icon

To answer your question - I get WAY more emotional than DH. We both do our share of yelling at the TV....but DH gets over it instantly. I don't. He sees losing as a part of sports. He takes it very well. Me...I've been known to throw things.Chat Icon People can rib me all they want about the Yankees...I don't get offended because I have fun ribbing Mets/Red Sox fans! Chat Icon It's all in good fun!

Losing has never hurt worse than the 2001 World Series to me though. DH would say the worst was when we let the Red Sox go to the WS (considering HOW we lost the series - yeah that was HORRENDOUSLY embarrassing)...but to me, emotionally it killed me to lose the 2001 WS. There was way too much up and down emotions in that series...coupled with 9/11 of course. I was depressed for a week. But one good thing came out of it - that's the series that brought DH and I together Chat Icon
