You could also do poems about the fall, descriptive writing about the leaves changing, fall veggies, Columbus day....Hope these help!

I teach 4th.

we did memoir in september, will do nonfiction for october. we will focus on native americans and do a thematic unit of sorts while reading the Sign of the Beaver.

in november we do persuasive writing, and december is functional/how-to.

i have the whole year memorized, LOL:

jan and part of feb is author study
march is profile writing
april is poetry (its poetry month i think)
may is fantasy
june is nonfiction again (immigration)

I teach high school, I usually focus on the following literary terms around this time of year:

Foreshadowing
Suspense
Imagery

i do mysteries in october. for writing to coincide, i do a lot of descriptive writing. the kids write clues, etc.

The lovely NYC BOE has given us the writing genre of Non-Fiction writing. We will learn to do "research" and then write about elephants!
