How do you get them to nap longer

I know there probably is no way - but maybe just maybe someone had an idea.

Jack goes down for a nap every day at 11 and will sleep for an hour and a half.

He wakes up so cranky and upset that it takes me another half hour to snap him out of it.

On the rare occasion when he sleeps for two hours - he wakes up happy.

This leads me to believe that he needs a longer nap.

Is there anything I can do? The kid is like an alarm clock. Wakes at 1 1/2 hours on the dot. Wakes at 5:38am - every morning. I do believe it's just his internal clock! Chat Icon

shameless bump!

I need help!

It just took me 45 mins to get him to calm down after his nap - and the only thing that worked was the Backyardigans!!!

From what you posted, I think he's napping too early, after not really exerting much energy. I find that if I take DDs to the park for a few hours, they run around, get exhausted, put them down around 2 - they will sleep for 3 hours. If I put them down at 1 after not doing much they will only sleep 1.5 hours. I hope that helps. Good luck! Chat Icon

But - he is up at 5:38 am. It's almost 5 hours by the time he naps.

Should I try to move it a little later? I could try going out in the morning - we usually hang in our pjs and play all morning. I could go out I guess.

I would try it, it can't hurt. The girls are up for 6-7 hours before their nap. That's why I am always out by 10 - to keep them up.

Ok - well then, I'm calling you tomorrow when I am about to pull out my hair because he is a cranky cranky lunatic! Chat Icon

Even better - maybe I'll plan a playdate at YOUR house one morning! Chat Icon

Re: How do you get them to nap longer

I totally agree that I think his nap should start later.

Thomas is up at 6:30 a.m. He naps around 1 p.m. and sleeps for between 2 1/2 and 3 1/2 hours. He goes to bed bedtween 7 p.m. and 8 p.m.

BTW - same thing happens to Thomas... If he wakes from his nap too early, he wakes up in a terrible mood and it takes a long time to calm him down.

I have an early waker too -- sometimes worse than 5:38. I agree with the advice of keeping him up just a little longer. In Matthew's new class they all nap at the same time. They can go down as early as 12:40 or so and nap until 3pm. So that's when DS sleeps...right up until 3pm. And on weekends he naps even later than that. The only difference for you is that you'll have to ride out the crankiness yourself for a few days to get him acclimated...for me I had daycare deal with the terror. And by the time we implemented it at home he was ok with it. There are still some days he'll want to go down earlier and I'll let him...but then he WILL NOT take another nap after that and be super cranky till bedtime.

Good luck!

Ok - so should I aim for a 12 nap? Or even later?

Tell me what to do - and I'll do it. Because right now I am so stressed out from dealing with him like this I could Chat Icon

Re: How do you get them to nap longer

I'd start with 12 p.m. and see if it makes a difference. If not, try even later... 12:30 p.m. or 1 p.m.

Good luck!

Re: How do you get them to nap longer

I don't necessarily think he should nap later. He is up early!

I am trying to think how long it was between waking up and naps for my DD at that age. I think she was up at aroud 7:30 and napped at around 10:30 or 11. Maybe you should even try putting him in earlier!

Also, when he wakes up do you go right in there to get him? I definatly emember at that age that sometimes we'd just sit and listen for a few minutes instead of going right in and she'd fall back esleep for another 20 minutes or so!

Re: How do you get them to nap longer

This is what I do..Maybe you'll want to give it a try..

I babysit. The baby I sit for gets up at 7AM just like DS does...Sometimes DS is up even earlier, but, we don't go in before 7. We let him talk and play.

The kids eat breakfast, play, and then we go on a walk. I do believe the fresh air does us ALL good.

Come home (by 11:30) they eat lunch. As they finish up, I clean up, wash them up and one by one bring them up, change diapers and lay them down. By now, it's about 12:15 or so.

They both usually zonk out by 12:30.

Definitley try going out and moving his nap later.
DS finally fell asleep today around 1 (he was too busy "talking" and "singing" LOL) and hes just now getting up.Chat Icon

Good Luck and keep us posted.Chat Icon
