Seeing people from school while I'm out on disability...

I'm in a bit of a tough situation.

I'm out on disability right now because I have a badly ruptured disc in my back. Because I'm pregnant, there's nothing I can do about it until after the baby is born.

The thing about it is, my two unbearable things are laying down and sitting. I can only sit during the 2nd half of the day, so that's when I can go out and do some things (food shopping, etc.).

I've found that I'm running into people I work with at the school, and even some kids that recognize me Chat Icon I can only wonder what they're thinking about me...when you think "disability", you think "incapacitated", but for me, it's a matter of the excruciating pain I endure all night and all morning.

I CAN'T STAND being in the house all day...but I'm so afraid that someone's going to see me and tell admin that I was out and about shopping.

Thoughts? Chat Icon

Oh, that is tough. Your medical and disability situation is nobody's business. But the truth is, I think if parents/students/coworkers/administrators from school see you shopping or whatever, that will raise an eyebrow and people may get suspicious and talk. Even though they should not judge you since obviously they don't know the whole story, you can't stop people from talking and perhaps forming a negative opinion of you.

Do you live in the district? If so, I would drive the extra distance to shop further away to reduce the chance of being seen by them.

Re: Seeing people from school while I'm out on disability...

I am out too, because I am having contractions, and I can't stand on my feet for too long (now its getting bad...I get them for the short amount of time I am in the shower). But I HAVE to go out and get things done. I have to do food shopping, I have to get diapers for my son. My husband doesn't get home til late, and I have to do this stuff. Of course, I am not on my feet for 5 hours doing it. I am not on complete bedrest, so I can be out. But I do feel bad when I am doing it, like I am cheating or something. It's hard.

This is EXACTLY how I feel. I never thought that being out on disability could still mean being able to do things in daily life.

Every once in awhile, when my pain gets better in the afternoon, I'll say to DH, "sometimes I'm not so sure I need to be out on disability". And every single time, he looks at me and says "Do you have ANY recollection of your crying episodes at 4am when you can't walk?" Chat Icon

I'm so paranoid that the disability company has people on the prowl, checking up on those receiving disability. I NEVER do any heavy lifting of any kind, but if you were to see me in the supermarket, I LOOK just fine. Chat Icon

The only problem is, I live in NC. Things are much more spread out around here, and if I'm not going to the Target that's around the block, I'm driving 10 miles and wasting 25 minutes.

Especially with the gas crisis down here (EXTREMELY difficult and rare to find gas), I'm being forced to stick close to home. Chat Icon

Beth, I wasn't on complete bedrest, so I was out and about too...I even went to school, while on bedrest to have my disability paperwork filled out by my principal.

don't worry about it, just take care of yourself and your Chat Icon
