How was LI formed?
I know it was formed from glaciers but that's about it. I know I must sound dumb to ask but I have to teach it and I'm not clear on it myself. Thanks.

Re: How was LI formed?
It was because of a glacier that was receding, as it moved it scraped out the shape of LI.

This is not true, the glacier did not scrape out long island. You could say glaciers "scraped out" some valleys in upstate new york. Long Island was formed by glacial deposition. As the glacier receded it left stuff behind - what we know as long island today. The glacier actually receded twice - which is why the middle of the island is more 'hilly" than the rest. The south shore is an outwash plain
I think for a basic explanation, the newsday website posted above is good.

Ok, I meant it scraped out the basic form and shape of the island... but deposition is correct as well... thanks for the clarification.
