I am new to the boards, but I was on LIW when I was planning my wedding.

I can't believe how hard it is to get a job. I have great skills, a Bachelors, experience...and yet, NOTHING

I don't have TONS of experience, I have been working as a waitress/bartender, but I can't even get an office or clerical job. It is so discouraging. I try to think positively, but that doesn't help. I couldn't get student loans to go back for my Masters with all this economic garbage, so continuing/changing my education is a no go. What am I missing? What don't I have? There are jobs out there, I know...I sent out over 40 resumes on CareerBuilder

Any words of wisdom??? Thanks

My Bachelors is in History...I can't go back for my Masters and teach because I can't get student loans.

I have office experience, customer service experience, planning, buying, catering sales, sales in general, heavy phones, filing, data entry, excellent computer skills, a professional demeanor, excellent interpersonal skills, independent worker, team worker, great communication skills, etc...

oh wow, it sounds like there are tons of things you are qualified for. I'm going to try an agency because I am not getting anywhere on my own maybe you should also try one.

Have you tried Indeed.com It is a job search engine that searches alot of job sites at once. You can also go to a temp agency but right now with the economy and unemployment being so bad it is going to be tough. Hang in there and the right job with come along. Good luck!!!

Thanks for your support. I was thinking of a temp agency. But honestly, with the way things are right now, maybe I should be happy where I am. I just keep praying I will start a "career" soon, ya know?? Thanks again

Where did you get your bachelors? Many colleges and universities offer career services to their alumni for free or at a very discounted rate. You may want to see what services they provide.

It is a tough economy, but simply posting or submitting your resume through a web site is not the best way to get noticed. The most effective job search method has been networking.

Do you know what you want to do (outside of teaching)? If so, then join a professional organization that is related to your interest, and begin attending their events. Network through your alumni society events. Tell your family and friends what you are looking for and see if they know anyone in the field that you could do an informational interview with.

If your passion is teaching, start gaining experience outside of the classroom by volunteering to tutor young children. The job market for teachers on Long Island is beyond difficult, so this added experience will help you when the market turns around and you're able to return to school.

You may also want to look into positions at local universities that offer tuition remission to employees so you don't have to take out loans for grad school.

Honestly, I think networking is the way to go these days to find a decent job.

SO MANY people send resumes over the internet-----potential employers get flooded.

I really feel that it comes down to who you know or who is willing to put in your resume/a good word for you.

I know this sounds harsh, but everyone sending resumes online pretty much has the same qualifications you do.

Even just going into businesses and asking to fill out an application/drop off your resume I think will make you stand out from the rest.

P.S. If teaching is your thing, and student loans are not an option right now, why not look into a program like the NYC Teaching Fellows? There are definitely lots of cons to it, but it seems like quite a few posters on here went that route and had a very positive experience----cons aside.

I believe they also pay for a majority of your Master's. Just a thought.......maybe start a thread under "teaching" and you will get a good response.
