Yoga and pain

I am new at yoga. I have done it about 4 times already, each time a new body part hurts. I expect when you try a new exercise you are supposed to be a little sore (especially when you walk around dehydrated like I do), but I can't bend. It's really bad soreness (on a scale from 0-10, it's about a 6), is this normal? I thought yoga was supposed to RELAX the muscles?

It is so important that you hydrate whenever you exercise..yes, yoga is relaxing, but it is also a workout where you might be using muscles you may not have prior. Additionally, your instructor should be telling you to listen to your body..if something feels wrong, it most likely is...don't give up..it is a great workout!

Thing is that it feels great while I am doing it...it's the day after that I can't move

You will def feel a little soreness... you are working and stretching various muscles. Yoga is relaxing - you're right. But go at your own pace and don't push yourself through an "uh oh" feeling... go to comfortable exertion. If you try to push a stress too fast you can hurt yourself. Also, make sure you are working opposing muscle groups as well. If you do a lot of backbends in one session, def throw in some Child's Poses to ease the stretch you just did....

And, try supplementing some balance poses in between your sessions because it'll give the stretching muscles a little break while working on all over strength.
