I'm so worried... Pls help!

Hi ladies,
I'm so worried b/c I called my doc's office today and since this is my first time being pregnant i figured I'd call to ask if I am havinbg a sonogram at my appt on Thurs. Last week dh and I went for our interview with the nurse. So teh receptionist asked how far along I am now and I told her on Thursday I'll be 6 wks and 1 day. She said that it is too early to do a sonogram. WHAT???
I felt awful. I feel like I've read on here that others have had one at that point.

i am going through so much right now and having a sonogram done would make me so happy.

Background Info:
July 15, 2008- I donated a kidney to my mom.
August- She came home from hospital w/ a trach in her throat but was doing super well.
Sept. 10th- my husband took my mom to the doc & he takes the trach out before mom was ready and 20 mins later she has a heart attack, dies, is recussitated after 45 mins.
NOW- she is on life support and has almost no brain function and is in a coma.

On Monday I will be taking mom off of life support & her funeral will be next week.

Please pray for me. God has given me a little piece of joy with this baby and I hope all goes well.

When is the first sonogram performed???

first of all Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon for your current situation.

Second- you should get an internal sonogram at your first appointment which will show the heartbeat.

Maybe the nurse was confusing it with a regular sonogram which is when they put the radar thing on your belly..

The internal they insert what looks like a long $ildo into your vagina.

Good luck!

Some Dr's do not do sono's that earlyy. With DS the dr didn't even see me until I was almost 8 weeks and he said normally he doesn't do sono's that early, but he would b/c DH was with me. He did it (an internal) and all we saw was a grain of rice. I guess it depends on the dr and the machinery they have available in their office.

Yup... they should be able to do an internal sono. I had mine at 6 weeks and was able to see the baby and hear the HB. The Dr told me to come back at 8 weeks and I got to see and hear the HB that time. Maybe the nurse was confused.

Wow...I'm so sorry that you've been through so much lately.

A lot of Dr's won't see you until you're 8 weeks because there is a good chance they won't see anything with the ultrasound until that point.

I would try not to worry too much about it. Go to your appointment on Thursday and talk to your doctor. Explain what you're feeling. Maybe they will do a sonogram and if not I'm sure they'll have you back to 8 weeks to do it them.

Good Luck

Re: I'm so worried... Pls help!

At 6 weeks you may not hear the heartbeat. To prevent us pregnant women from panicking unnecessarily if we don't hear the heartbeat, doctors don't perform the sono until 8 weeks.

My Doc. didn't even want me to visit until I'm 8 weeks along!

Unless you're high risk, dont worry about it.

I'm so sorry for what you are going through.

Many doctors won't do a sonogram before 8 weeks. Also some doctors don't even do sono's in their office. Mine doesn't. I have to go to an outside facility for my sono's.

Re: I'm so worried... Pls help!

First off I am so sorry for everything you have gone through.

AS for the sonogram, every practitioner is different. Some may do a sono after 8 weeks to "date" the pregnancy. THey usually waituntil 8 weeks because before then there is no guarantee that everythign will be there yet and developed and a lot of times it causes unecessary worry. Yo ucan read thread after thread on here about women who go in and get ultrasounds before 8 weeks and are panicking because all they see is a sac or a sac and fetal pole and not HB yet. THen they have to go a week or so panicking about the pregnancy and whether or not it is viable.

Because of this a lot of Pracctitioners wait until 8 weeks by which you should see the heart beat.

Other practitioners won't do an ultrasound until 12 weeks.

You need to ask your practitioner when you will have your first one.

My Dr. won't so a sonogram before 8 weeks, before then there is a chance that you won't see anything and it could cause some unnecessary stress for you. Try to hang in there! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I'm so sorry for what you're going through. Chat Icon As pps said, most doctors will not do a sono before 8 weeks. Also, depending on your doctor and your insurance, you may not have a sono until much later in your pregnancy.

Re: I'm so worried... Pls help!

My Dr. wouldn't do a sono until at least 8 weeks - My 1st appointment was at 9 weeks ........They gave me the option of seeing him earlier, but I figured, for him to do what? Look at me?

Many people get very very early sonos b/c they are seeing RE's to get PG, but every Dr. is different. - Some OBGYNs will do a sono early, and some will not .......

How awful--I am so sorry to hear about your mom. Chat Icon

I had a sonogram at 6 weeks, but that was because I was an infertility patient and was under the care of a reproductive endocrinologist.

If I were you, I would INSIST on a sonogram--it's your right as a patient. Just be aware that you may not yet see a heartbeat at 6 weeks, and that's ok.

Im soo sorry for what your going through.. I agree with PPs, even if they dont do a sono they may be able to at least do the heartbeat monitor, its a microphone they put up to your belly and you can hear the heartbeat. I would ask doctor to do that just to ease your mind.

Even if you INSIST...if there is no medical need for it the insurance won't cover it, and its actually not a patient right.

I'm not saying she shouldn't be able to get one if she asks for it but just stating the facts because it is not a patient right and there is a good chance she would have to pay out of pocket if the MD does not authorize it. Basic scans start around $400...........

YOu can't hear the Heartbeat by doppler until 12+ weeks. She is only 6 weeks along, there is a good chance that the HB may not even be there yet.

THey best thing is to wait, as much as it stinks....but you aren't belleding or cramping which is a GREAT sign!!

You can request a sono at any time you want one so I would ask at your next appointment. I think they are just worried if its too early that you won't see anything and that is just even more stressChat Icon

Re: I'm so worried... Pls help!

I don't have my first appointment until the last week of October BUT I am not getting my sonogram at that appointment. The first is confirmation of pregnacy, bloodwork, do's & don'ts, etc. (8 weeks)
I have to come back the following week for a sonogram in which I will be 9 weeks.

Good Luck Chat Icon
