please help
Does anyone here have bad asthma? I wound up in the ER today - had a bad asthma attack. I remember when I got prego the family dr told me no steroids when prego. Then they gave me prednisone in the ER today - - and followed that with another 4 day supply for this week. It helped but now Im worried. The pharmist who filled it said its not usually recommended but if my OB ok'd it he must feel its alright (I am out of my 1st trimester which they said is a plus) The OB said its ok because its a small dosage and only for a few days vs. the normal dosage theyd give if you werent prego. I was reading some medical websites that say steroids can cause birth defects or abortion of fetus in larger doses Im just really really nervous now :( any thoughts or opnions or anyone been through this with their asthma? TIA

Re: please help
I give steroids all the time to pregnant women who are endanger of pre term deliveries. It helps mature the babies lungs. However it is a small dose and we only give 2 doses usually.

Re: please help
What your OB told you is correct. The information available on the use of prednisone in pregnancy supports its use to control certain maternal illnesses. When deciding whether to give a pregnancy woman a medication or not, the doctor has to weigh the benefit of the drug against the risk to the fetus. When you're having a severe asthma attack, it poses a hugh risk to you and to the fetus, and therefore, they have to treat it. I feel that what your doctor gave you was appropriate. Feel better, and try not to worry.
