Vision changes with contacts?

I am only about 5 weeks pregnant. I wear contacts and lately have been feeling like they are dirty or that my vision is hazy. Did anyone else notice any vision changes as a symptom?

Your vision does change during PG. I haven't notice my eye sight change but I am reluctant to go get a new prescription. So I've been wearing my glasses.

Re: Vision changes with contacts?

yup, the hormones, especially progesterone will actually change the shape of your cornea so a lot of pregnant women sometimes find that their lenses feel uncomfortable, also your vision can change.

I called my opthamologist about this and he said there is nothing they can do and recomended I wear my glasses and after I have the baby I should be able to wear my contacts again..

So for now I'm 100% in glasses Chat Icon

Most eye Dr's won't do eye exams on PG women and won't change their prescriptions because its all hormone based changes

Oh, I didn't know that vision changes with PG. My vision is very messed up for various reasons, and its getting even more messed up now. I was very concerned, but its good to hear that this is somewhat normal.

Re: Vision changes with contacts?

I had problems with my contacts not fitting correctly when I was pregnant with DD, but not until late in my 2nd/early 3rd trimester.

I went to my eye dr., and like one of the posters above said your eyes can change shape during pregnancy and there is nothing they can do about it. They didn't, however, have any issues doing an eye exam to double check.

The only advice I was given was to wear my glasses more often, and that within a few weeks after delivering if my contacts weren't back to normal to come back in.....but they did go back to normal so hang in there.

They can do an eye exam to rule out infection but they won't change your prescription etc so they usually don't bother doing an eye exam.

I was stunned when I learned this that I called 15 other opthamologists office and they all said the same thing Chat Icon

Thanks for explaining this, it makes total sense to me now! I've been going through so many lenses, and my vision is definitely blurry lately.

Re: Vision changes with contacts?

Hi everyone. I just wanted to clear a few things up. What happens with pregnancy is the cornea swells ever so slightly but enough to change the Rx and make the fit of contacts tighter which results in dry feeling and uncomfortable feeling. This is not everyone. Every dr has their own beliefs and protocol. I am an eye dr and I would never not do an eye exam on a pregnant woman. After explaining what COULD be happening I do disuade the use of contacts (especially due to the chance of infection) and will update their glasses. How can someone go through the rest of their pregnancy not seeing properly!? After giving birth, if the lenses need to be changed I usually change them free of charge. I know there is differing opinions but in my circle of dr friends we would all do exams on pregnant women. If you can't see with glasses, insist on an exam or find someone else.

Re: Vision changes with contacts?

Yes it happens.

I wear gas permible (semi-hard) so drying out is NEVER an issue with mine (they are dry to begin with and your natural tears keep them moist)

I got the blur thing and then the extra dry thing (which again, normally NEVER happens) so switched to glasses.

And still I got some strange vision from my glasses, like one as really out of focus and the other was extra sharp. Also it was like my depth preception was being messed with. Ugh. I stopped driving at night and only drove in the daytime.

The vision got so bad I could barely stand working on my laptop at work or watching TV. Chat Icon

Good News, it gets better after birth Ha Chat Icon

Still don't forget painful vision with headaches should be carefully monitored as pressure in your eyes could be a sign of preclampsia (spelling?)
